Do not compare a EU country with a NON-EU country like the UK. You can keep your EU driving license as long as its valid. If its expiring then you need to exchange it into a portugees drivinglicense. And EU residents do NOT loose any license.

This would really restrict my future plans in Portugal. It sort of makes sense why you see so many small trucks, tractors etc on u tube.

Interesting! I have a Class G and I can drive trucks and cars…. I’ve driven moving trucks… not 18 wheelers but the big box trucks. You don’t see all those categories here.
I’m 60 in February so I will not get to skip the exchange. No big deal, except the delay on getting a proper licence and wanting to rent a car. I don’t plan to buy one right away but planned to rent whenever I need one… til I find something affordable. So that might not be an option!?

Ours took a few months. However we got them exchanged now (I kept my categories, my wife lost hers). We have also hired a car in the U.K. a few weeks ago without any problems.
I may have missed something, but why not just get a new copy of your license, and give Portugal your old one?

I did a special psychological test to keep my Category C. So did my partner, but he lost his. Random decisions!

All photo license need photo updated every 10 years, there is a date by it to tell you when it needs doing.
We exchanged in spain and all our uk in title mend is now on the spanish one too, when we fill out it ask if and what we wanted to keep
