🚌 Artist sells her house to travel full-time in a van – Why and how I did it!

Telling the story for the first time. Why we sold our house, left everything behind and ran away to travel full-time in our van! There were good parts challenging parts, freedom and discomfort so I’m sharing it all here! I explain why I became anxious, scared and exhausted and also the really difficult side to van life. We also stayed at Airbnb’s did some housesitting and I learned how to still practice my art whilst travelling. Thanks for keeping me company on this wild journey, biggest loves & softest hugs, Wendy. 1. Thank you, Wendy, for this background information. I wish I could just talk with you directly……so many things. We are all so varied and complex. You show us how a life can be lived and how it resonates and reverberates for us all. Much love. X J

  2. Thank you for this lovely story of your life. At the beginning I thought it would be boring to listen to, but I very quickly complete forgot everything around me and really listened to your fine voice telling this wonderful journey that your life have been. It was so good to completly forget everything, and just be with you in your cosy little studie, listning to your story. Thanks .

  3. Dear Wendy. Thankyou for your wonderful post. I'm a long time sufferer of depression and going through one of my down periods. There was something about your video today that really spoke to me. Life is definitely worth living, especially when there's so many adventures to be had. So I'm getting out of bed, off to have a shower and then try and enjoy a little sunshine. I also wrote down that beautiful quote at the end. Thanks once again lovely girl.🥰🧡🧚‍♀️🎨🍄

  4. I embarked on a van life journey at 40 and I'm so pleased someone finally touched on the less glorious parts of van life. Everyday chores that one takes for granted in a sticks and bricks is harder. Everything. I could never completely settle into the life…I always felt uprooted and a bit unsafe if I'm honest. I don't miss it one bit but I'm thankful for the experience.

  5. When I was looking at photos of your beautiful home (before van life), it reminded me of a beautiful home we once had.
Thing is, we worked ALL the time and were never really able to truly LIVE there – it was a stopping place to shower before
more work. I guess we all learn from that — it's no fun having possessions that own you, versus one being in charge of
one's own life! It is so much nicer when we can keep it all in manageable perspective! Thanks Wendy! x

  6. I enjoyed hearing about your house sitting and van life years so much! i hope we will hear more about your experiences living on the road and in other countries in the future. Thank you for sharing.

  7. I just watched your story and found it so interesting and how wonderful that you shared it, I just happened upon your video and now I want to follow you I love art journalling looking forward to watching more of your videos. I live in Canada

  8. My biggest concern with living in a van or traveling full-time is how I will make money to afford travel and continuing the pursuit of my passions. I will have the courage and stability to do something like this one day. Manifesting it for myself 🙂 thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. This made the idea real for me.

  9. OMG, I feel you! We have left Australia a year ago, after living there for 8 years (from Germany originally) and traveled to Mexico and Nicaragua. And I was so happy to be able to travel and get rid of everything BUT I also felt so lost while we were traveling and staying in hostels. Always havíng to eat out and not having much space, we both realised, it is not for us. And working in loud spaces on crappy chairs is really no fun. I know, it all sounds wonderful to be a digital nomad, I am so so grateful to have been able to try it, but it wasn't for us. Now we are in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, just on the brink to sign for our first house. And it feels so good! Can't wait to get our space ready and do it all the way we want. And having a table for my art work and another one for paid work, with a proper chair. Heaven! Thank you, for adressing this, I really do feel you.

  10. Love the video. I’m confused about one thing. If you had a five year mortgage, wouldn’t you have had no mortgage payments after that? Meaning at least one of your giant bills was gone?
It’s obviously great you made the jump and did the van life thing, I’m just confused on that.

  11. Thanks for sharing your journey!! I also did some traveling… but alone.. Most always had a job to go to tho.. most times w/ a place to live.. When I was a promoter for a traveling Magic Show .. I never knew where I was going til I headed from the office.. One time I was headed to a place where I used to live and stayed w/ family there… Saved a lot not having to pay for hotels…Was an interesting job!! … Always enjoy Wendy’s Waffleing!!! I have felt so many of the same things along the way…And so enjoy your artwork!!!The peeps I’ve given it to have loved it as well!!!… Wish we could meet for tea and a good “Chin Wag”!!!… Love and Light…😻👩🏻‍🦰💖

  12. I travelled the united states in a van for 6 weeks with 4 friends, and I learned van life isn't as glamorous as the internet makes it seem. It can be beautiful and you get to see some amazing places, but going to the bathroom, having a meal, doing the dishes, finding a place to sleep…. all take much more energy than they normally would. I know exactly what you meant when you were talking about this! van life is totally about the journey, and it is perfect for a temporary situation but brings many challenges people don't think about

  13. Absolutely loved this, we're going through something similar. We've sold our 1930s home to move to a different part of the UK and downsize. Although I'm looking forward to the change, I'm dreading the thought of not having roots if we have to temporarily rent. Watching this has actually brought some healing for that and I'm going to embrace it rather than fear it. Thank you for this xxx

  14. What a beautiful story! I loved to hear it!
Thank you for sharing such a private part of your live. I always like to stay in my home. I am going to Egypt in may to stay with our family,
But already I start worrying about leaving home🙃😁❤️😘

  15. As I am a practicing astrologer, I LOVE hearing your Uranus opposition story! So fascinating how you and your love James took on this great big adventure of the van life after the house mortgage. What a jump!

  16. Thank you for sharing your adventures and van life. I found it very interesting to hear about that amazing time in your life. You are a wonderful storyteller, there was no "Wendy-Waffling" at all. I admire the courage you and James had to organize and fulfill your dream and create memories you will treasure forever. You and James are quite a team! Thank you for another great video Wendy!

  17. What a wonderful video, Wendy! You are a fantastic storyteller. I loved hearing about your traveling experiences and seeing the snapshots you took along the way.

In the 1970s I took an 8 month very low-budget trip with a girlfriend to Europe. We spent the first 3 months in Israel living on a kibbutz. After that, we bought bikes and cycled thru parts of England as well as hitchhiking in Cornwall. We stayed at youth hostels along the way. Paris came next for a lovely month of exploring on foot and staying in a student pension. By this time, both of us were ready to go somewhere warm. We took a bus from England all the way to Greece. We spent a very hot month of August in Athens and on the island of Spetse.

Like you, I’m so glad I have these travels experiences to look back on.

  18. Can't beat travelling for personal growth and gaining perspective, not to mention fun and excitement! My husband and I have lived in several countries, and travelled far and wide over the last 18 years. Eventually we bought a house with some land and settled for a while, raising chickens and growing veggies and herbs. Then we moved into a city and bought a larger house, which was an exciting change. Just this week we sold our RV as it is too small for us with our dog, but next year we are planning to sell the house and will be on the move again, depending on current events, pandemics and all the stuff that can happen. Loved hearing about your travels, it looks like you had an amazing time 🙂

  19. Lovely story! Did you buy property again when you resettled or are you just renting? I sold my gorgeous villa (Cyprus) in 2017 and am renting now. It was too big and costly for one person as I lost my beloved in 2012. I have a studio now to die for and am a happy bunny.

  20. I am a full time teacher. Thank you, Wendy. How many years ago was that story with the van life? Where was your daughter at that time, with you? How many years did you live the van life? And how did you earn your money, with online jobs? What did make you decide to leave the van life and live in a flat again?

  21. Thanks for sharing your story! I really enjoyed it! As I tried convincing my husband to do something similar when we retired. He wouldn’t have any of it, because he knew that space would get very small very fast. Now we’re retired on a lake, peaceful and enough space for us to roam, and so grateful for our journey. Thanks again, and yes, I noticed the beautiful flower paintings all around!👍🥰❤️🥰❤️🥰❤️
