1 year in Portugal: Expectations vs Reality. Is it Worth The Hype?

I’ve been living in Portugal for over a year now. In this video, I’ll be talking if Portugal is actually worth the hype. I’ll go through expectations and the reality, and things I had to get used to. If you’re moving to Portugal, these things might surprise you too!

  1. Too early for the fake knee caps haha! Lovely video Yulia, I am in Vancouver and planning to get 1 year work holiday in Europe before turning 35! If you were to start all over again, which EU country would you pick?

  2. Yulia, I've heard the same words about high prices from locals, but in Georgia =) And you know, I try to clarify to myself that they are really hospitable people, but their government doesn't want to protect their wallets. So, I completely agree with you that you cannot change Portugal rent prices, even if you move away to Canada.

  3. What do u think about Turkey?

You can try to live in Turkey. I think, everything is better for western expats. If you don't wanna live, at least you should travel.

If you have questions about Turkey, i will gladly answer.

  4. Yulia, there are a lot of priorities in Portugal, but you are not one of them. The more you complain on social media the less service you will receive. It's amazing how now you search Portugal on YT it is videos of people like you complaining about the Portuguese way. You think that because you have arrived, now Portugal must change it ways to meet your needs. Sorry that is not how it works. If I go to Russia and complain about Russians how do you think I will be received? You put yourself in your current situation, if you don't like it move elsewhere. Blasting your host country on social media only hurts you. You will see how many "Amanhas" will increase in your life now, and eventually you will move else where. This is you: I want to complain, but don't complain about me complaining. Enough already, it's getting old.

  5. "If you want to earn more money do everything "hoje" instead of "amanhã""

Nope! If I do everything "hoje" I actually earn less money because doing everything "hoje" requires the existence of gaps in my schedule. They always say "amanhã" because they are all overbooked. Same logic as with airline overbooking, airlines overbook to make sure they are never left with an empty seat. Service people in Portugal overbook to make sure they never stay idle during worktime.
About live shows: did you notice the existence of lots of Summer festivals?

  6. Thanks a lot. We are gonna move to Portugal from Russia and we assume that the lack of change of seasons is not the biggest problem for us. Considering that where we live the temperature in winter is -35 degrees Celsius. And winter lasts 5 months a year.
Which city do you think is better to live in Portugal: Lisbon or Porto?
