Living Under a Rock
Have you ever taken offense to someone asking you if you live under a rock? Well, we don’t know about you, but something tells us that the people who originally had this house—If you can even call it that—built, might have. A little too much of it. Like, come on! How else do you explain it? It’s either that or an homage to Patrick from Spongebob. All jokes aside, what you’re looking at right now wasn’t a neanderthal’s doing. This—has, shes, and theys—is Casa do Penedo or the “Castle of Stone” in Portugal. Although its appearance suggests otherwise, it was first built in 1972. Yeah. You heard that right. 1972 and not the Neolithic age. Anyhoo.
Designed by an engineer by name of Guimarães, it was supposed to be a rural getaway for a local family. In a pretty remote location. And it was. Until it started attracting a lot of attention. Mostly from tourists. Which, given its peculiarity, makes a lot of sense. To us, that is. To the family, who had intended it to be a quiet retreat, on the other hand, it was nothing short of a nuisance. As a result, they moved away and the place was converted into a museum. As of now, both of its stories house an array of items—including photographs explaining the structure’s history.
Cooped Up
Lately, it feels like you can’t walk ten paces without rent being due. You scrape it together today, blink, and—lo and behold—your landlord’s back for more. It’s so frustrating. Especially when you’re fresh out of college and on the lookout for a job. However, as the saying goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way. On that note, we’d like you to meet Dai Haifei. A Beijing-based architect, was in the same boat as us until he found a unique solution. The solution is, to move into an egg house. We know what you’re thinking. What on God’s green earth is an egg-house? Don’t worry. He doesn’t live in a chicken coop.
An egg-house, dear viewers, is basically a sleep pod designed to look like an egg. Haifei first got the idea for one from a conceptual project displayed at an exhibition. And at first glance, that’s exactly what the end product seems to be. A sculpture or an art project of some sort. Like, look at it. We’d mistake it for everything but a house. Nonetheless, it’s still a house. Not your conventional one with a backyard, but still. If you’re still not convinced, let’s take a minute to list its specification.
