About us: We are from the USA and have moved to the beautiful Island of Madeira in Portugal. We are very grateful to have this opportunity. We have put together this channel to talk about our journey. We hope to help you with yours.
Have you ever thought about giving up on the American Dream? Well we finally decided to do just that. We chose to downsize our life into one we could afford in retirement. And that has taken us across the world.
Are you thinking about moving abroad, becoming expats or immigrating? Or maybe you are moving to Portugal or Madeira Portugal. Each week we talk about our journey to retirement, in moving to Portugal, moving to the Island of Madeira and our new experiences. We also answer questions from our viewers!

In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon.

  1. I love it! "I do what I want!" I am retired and that is exactly what I do. I do or not do what I want. We sold our house, lots of extra stuff, 2 extra cars, etc. And, we left 3 days after I retired to full time RV. My husband had retired a few months before to get the house and everything ready to sell. After 2 1/2 years and a few months before the covid lock down, we found the cutest little stucco house on the Oregon coast and although we didn't plan to stop full timing we bought it. We are so happy. We moved from many, many years in the Nevada desert to being about 500 steps from the Pacific Ocean. We do or don't do what we want every day. Love your videos. I am an American of Azorean descent. And, I can get citizenship in Portugal through my grandparents. Kathleen

  2. After a video jam packed with information, we saw the great Leslie channeling Bob Fossee with her mesmerizing dance moves @10:25. Then, we noticed the directorial genius Wolf (that's Mr. Wolf to you and me) doing his best "Jazz Hands" in the thumbnail. And THAT"s when it occurred to us — this is no ordinary American family! So much creativity and ingenuity. We can only ponder what will come next??? We can't wait to see Alan bust a move as he tip toes through the levadas or bursts out in his favorite rap songs. Always, good, great fun… guaranteed.

  3. Thanks for yet another enjoyable video. Yes, Framlingham is more to my liking than London, although a bit too flat to represent an ideal location. Have you adjusted to the mountainous terrain of Madeira? I don't mind Ontario or MIchigan, where some of my relatives live, but I miss the vistas of Norway and British Columbia. Thirty years ago, or so, there was a ferry from Molde, where we first lived in Norway, to Newcastle, England, which is across the river from Gateshead, where my maternal grandmother lived, before she emigrated to Canada in 1911. So we took our left-hand drive car to England by ferry, and spent a month driving around. There was only one occasion when driving on the wrong side of the road became problematic. Our lane closed for road-works, and we had to drive on the right side of the road for a hundred meters or so. The problem was, we forgot to move back, until someone flashed their lights at us. I have found that this type of problem never arises with rental right-hand drive cars. However, I once tried to open the driver's door of a parked taxi in Dublin. The driver told me this was an almost daily occurrence with passengers from North America or the European continent.

  4. Olá Alan, Leslie & Wolf! Until we can make the move to Madeira, we continue to live vicariously through your videos. 😀 I do have a trivial question. Regarding driving on the left (wrong 😉) side of the road in London, are the brake and clutch pedal positions switched as well in right-hand drive vehicles? This could make or break our decision to visit the UK. 😂

  5. Alan and Leslie, I almost do what I want. As of March 31, 2023 it will be official. Plane tickets and 6 months of Air B and B booked. Can’t wait….See you on the mainland or Madeira, Portugal soon. We will be living near Porto and finding a place to purchase soon. JP

  6. Nice that you are taking advantage of traveling from Madeira! You are healthier, enjoying the moment, making new friends, and not rushing around and consumed with buying things. Sounds like your retirement plan is turning out even better than expected! I like the idea of a side hustle or picking up a new skills or hobbies to keep growing in retirement.

  7. Hi Alan and family, much enjoyed your England vids. So different fm Portugal, but England is our best buddy and I love it there, except the weather. Was this your 1st x driving on the other side? I never did, and will be going to South Africa next year. Want to rent a car, but honestly, I am reticent and afraid I will end up on the wrong side of the road making a turn. Keep up the vids and the adventure. Ur so right, being retired here in PT especially, Ive never been busier. I can actually say, I have no time, and feel good about it ! 😁

  8. Hi Alan and Leslie – Thanks for another great video that will help us cross the threshold into retirement. Things are always easier when you can benefit from someone else's experiences! Thanks for sharing some of the pitfalls we have to look forward to. Cheers!
