In today’s travel vlog, I discuss the 10 Things to Never Do in Portugal & Don’ts of Portugal. This is part one of a two part video serious on things to never do in Portugal & Don’t Do This in Lisbon Portugal!
Part 2 or 10 Things to Never Do and Don’t Do This in Lisbon Portugal will be released a day after this video. This is not a Portugal travel guide but a Don’ts of Portugal and 10 things to never do in Portugal. Check out Part 2 here:
10 Things You Should Never Do In Portugal
1 – Never say gracias! It’s obrigado not gracias for saying thank you. Portuguese people speak Portuguese not Spanish! While Portuguese and Spanish are similar because they both have latin roots – they are different languages. Even thank you is better than gracias – most Portuguese speak English. Side note: Since Portuguese people do not speak Spanish…..they are not hispanic!!! Don’t call them hispanic!
2 – Never try to find dinner before 7pm. Most restaurants will be closed and even if they are open. The kitchen will probably be closed and you’ll just be able to get pastries and drinks. The Portuguese eat dinner from 7 to around 11pm. Side note: You want be able to find lunch earlier than 1pm either!
3 – Never forget your sunscreen. Portugal gets around 300 days of sun a year in most parts. Even when it’s cold, the sun is beating down on you. So make sure you put on some sunscreen before you go out.
4 – Never assume things brought to your table before the meal are free. Unlike many places, things brought to the table like bread, olives or butter cost extra if you eat them. Yes I said butter, they will charge you for each little packet of butter. This little trick is called couvert and it’s a way to get extra money out of you. So make sure you ask – most likely it’s not free.
5 – Never assume that a Portuguese person will be on time. In my world if someone says to meet them at 7pm, I show up at 6:45pm. That’s not the case here in Portugal. A Portuguese person telling you they will meet you at 7pm means sometime between 7pm and 8pm!
Reminder again not a Portugal travel guide but a Don’ts of Portugal and 10 things to never do in Portugal.

Loool love this kind of videos. . .the way people see us. . . And i totaly understood the reference about being on time its obviously on the social aspect like meeting a friend not a work or serius business thing. . . Its like. . ."até logo talvez?!"
Also too Portuguese people are envious and jealous and prideful and despiseful and they can be bums about it because Spanish people have soul Latino and Spanish we have soul but they don't have a soul the demon culture but there are good Portuguese people out there though like my ex-girlfriend she was an angel not all of them I'm picking on I just don't like the ones that don't like charismatic people and they don't like Spanish people with soul and Latinos because they can be heartless about it Spanish people from Spain and not fighters the lovers they get the woman but Portuguese people can't get woman they don't have it in their ability to that's why they're jealous of Latinos and Spaniards and their bums not all of them though they need to let go of the past and start over new with Spanish people because we f**** look alike and yes they're good and their culture they're good fight is the good Cooks but they got to let go of the s*** with the Spanish and the Latinos they have to because we're the ones that would defend them if worth came to worse and I'm not just talking I'm saying the truth they hate that s***🔔🎵🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🇩🇴🇪🇸🇲🇽🇵🇷🇻🇪🇺🇾🇨🇴🇨🇺💗💓❣️♥️💖🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🥃🍾🍷🍺🍹🍸🥡🍜🥢 Tesla man Tesla some Spanish people I like that they are Tesla and tusslers trust and belief but some of them are ladies guys and that's why they jealous I love some of them but some of them I don't like because they don't like me
Yeah Portugal has competition with Spain because they're jealous of Spain they're jealous of the Spaniards Portuguese people are very jealous of Spanish they got a hatred of the devil in them for Spanish and Latino and all of them it's a shame because they look like us too 🇪🇸🇩🇴🇨🇺🇨🇴🇺🇾🇻🇪🇵🇷🇲🇽🔔
Just say thank you😊
Well I was in the USA and americans are never on time
1:08 portuguese people they do speak spanish
better things to do in portugal nether go there its a cheaty country i did one time i never coming back
We’ll first of all Portuguese people are Hispanic. They are not Latino. Hispanic people are people from Hispania or the Iberian peninsula. So Spanish, Portuguese, and Basque are all Hispanic or Iberian. Mexicans and other Latin Americans are not Hispanic even though they have usurped that term.
I say Obrigado because I'm brazilian american.
native american here, NO, they don't speak a lot of english. i got no idea why you have such impression. most of em understand some words but they either not willing to speak to you or their english is sooooo poor
How you gonna say top 10 things then only mention 5?
I prefer alot more talk with the Spanish than English turists. And yes,i speak Spanish because i have Spanish family.
How long have you lived in Portugal……..
In regards to the bread and whatever other things they put in front of you in a restorant there's a law that even most of the Portuguese people do not know. I'll explain it: If you are a client and you order something you are obligated to pay for it, BUT if you do not order it and they simply put it in front of you, legally, they are offering it to you. The only reason they charge for it is because people don't know the law and pay without questioning. If they ask you for that money you simply need to say that you didn't order it. They can't force you to pay, and let's face it do you really think that the police is going to show up because you are refusing to pay for a slice of bread that the restorant offered to you? I always eat a slice of bread with butter and I always refuse to pay in the end. They trick people with that but once you know the law they can't trick you anymore. I know this because I got a degree in a tourism school. I'm also Portuguese and I do live in Portugal.
I wonder. What happens if you say obrigado in Spain? Obrigado means obliged, in both Portuguese and Spanish. Saying Muito Obrigado is like saying much obliged in English. In Portugal, you can also say graças. It's an archaic form of obrigado, which is mostly used in prayer as in Graças a Deus. Try saying graças in Portugal, and see what happens. Just make sure you don't include the evil i.
You shouldn't have included the first one. May I speak Dutch or German in the USA? Do American speak German. Sorry, the first one doesn't make sense at all. I won't get offended if you say " Gracias". However, you are in Portugal. The other points make sense to everyone.
Calling us spanish or saying we speak Spanish isnt just offensive because of history with spain with that said rivalry but because Portugal is mostly unknown online, majority of the apps which mostly are developed in US have brazilian portuguese and spanish but never the original portuguese, americans are 99% ignorant have no idea who we are think we speak spanish some probably think we are part of spain and they have no idea where we are located. It's just offensive how a country that has almost a millenia is treated like this with such ignorance after having the world on it's hands, I really think certain people need a history and geography lesson because that type of ignorance is spreading world wide.
AbRiGaDo what as a portuguese person it’s obrigado
I'm Portuguese and I can relate saying I am going to be on a certain place at that time but show up late.
Portugal and Spain two different countries
I'm Portuguese and I say gracias😅 and merci, and thank you, and wtv I feel like, I just never say obrigada (tks in portuguese). Upsss😅
Did you know that obrigado is similar to arigatto because my country (Portugal) introducced that word to the Japanese??
VIVA PORTUGAL 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Just a little correction: when you “obrigado”, the first O is spelled like the O from Orange or Octopus!
