IF you are a foreigner, with foreign amounts of money. Living here with minimum wage, while rents and overall cost exploded is almost impossible. You make in a normal job between 700 euros and 900 euros, a one bed apartment out of the city center is 600 to 700 euros, while rooms near the capital are half your wage. Most expats loved the summer, moved in, struggled during the winter and left. It´s one of the most corrupt countries in Europe, and it is actually more expensive then for example Spain. Most Portuguese actually intend to leave at some point, majority go to Switzerland, France and the UK. Absolutely amazing for vacation, but to live? It is super easy to get Portuguese nationality at this point, the country is completely for sale. We have favelas for example, where foregeigners don´t go – search Bairro da Jamaica, Quinta do Barruncho, Ferrel, Torrão 1 e torrão 2, Cova da Moura, etc, and there is still tons of problems with racism. If it is better than a lot of EU contries? definetely. Financially it is very very complicated, but hey if you make your money outside of Portugal, Life can be great here.

Dear Portugal. You are back in the world spotlight with your charms and your food and your landscapes. Your immigrants have spread all over the world. You have given us the ukulele, malasadas, caldo verde, piri piri chicken, Port Wine and pasteis de nata. Your coffee is the best in Europe. Your wine is unique and delicious. You gave us Eusebio, Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo. You gave us Fado and Amalia Rodrigues. You gave us your language and your poetry. You gave us the globalized world.

But for some bloody reason you have not given us your architecture and your immaculate sense of design. Portugal, you NEED to export your amazing architecture to the rest of the world, especially North America. The cities here are so drab, dull, boring and ugly. You have perfected the European sense of space and design. Even your sidewalks are works of art. Even your modern buildings are attractive and well thought out. Lisbon and Porto are magical cities. Madeira and the Azores are floating gardens in the sea. The rest of the world needs you to teach us. Help us, Portugal. Help us. Teach us how to make things beautiful again.
