#2 DITL: Looking at Properties in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal

Hello everyone!
We are Fenia, Adam and Odin and together we are traveling around Portugal in our tiny caravan, searching for land to start our ecological dream farm!

We are planning to install greywater systems, raise happy animals, be self-sufficient in electricity and water, plant food forests, build eco-structures like cob houses and treehouses, and much more. Our biggest goal is to have our own bakery on the land and serve farm-to-table meals.

We have been exploring most of Portugal for about 3 months now and I will have to make a decision on where to settle very, very soon! Traveling alone with a toddler (and a young dog!) might seem pretty crazy, and it is indeed very challenging, but for me, it was the only way to make sure I find a place that suits our needs and head towards self-sufficiency!

I think that documenting our journey from looking for a place until reaching our self-sufficiency goals can be interesting and inspiring, especially to fellow mommies! Becoming mothers doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our dreams and live a “normal life”. You can achieve anything you set your mind to, even if you have (young) kids!

We started looking for land near Tabua, Coimbra, made our way down to Barril de Alva, Penela, Lousa, Tomar, and Obidos. We continued our research down south in Monchique and on our way back up to Castelo Branco we stopped in Alentejo to visit the family who hosted us last year. We had come with workaway to learn how to farm. Adam was almost two years old back then.

In this video, I parked our caravan in an olive grove owned by a kind-hearted family in Idanha-a-Nova.
You will see a typical day in our life: making sourdough pita bread and porridge for all of us including our dog, coffee (mmmm), harvesting summer fruit, and visiting properties. When Adam is sleeping I do things like crocheting and repairing clothes that Odin has damaged during playtime! At the end of the video, we enjoy a simple dinner with a beautiful sunset.

Sourdough pita measurements:

300g bread flour
100g whole wheat flour
1 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp instant dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
2Tbsp olive oil
180g warm water
100g milk
120g active sourdough starter
