I went to the Mohamed Ali mosque couple of months ago and noticed the missing carpets as well, last time I was there (~10 years ago) it still had the carpets, but it was super dirty from pigeons hanging on the chandeliers. I believe they thought it is easier to clean if there are no carpets?
