  1. Thanks for the great video. Could you guys let me know how much the daily rate was for the digger work? I need similar work done and I am collecting quotes.

  2. You might want to try using diving rods to locate water. You can make them out of metal coat hangers (in an ‘L’ shape and using old biro tubes as handle to allow the metal parts to move freely and where both rods cross, will be where the water is.

  3. So you should have water in it now if you had the torrential rains we just had lol… Terracing is a good idea too.. slowing the progress of the water as it flows downward will be very beneficial to anything growing.. or anything you plant. Great that your digger driver is such an enthusiast! Great job!

  4. that digger guy is cool, how much did he charge for making that pond (or are we at ocean scale now? 😛) and the road in? swales sounds like a good idea to stop the rush of water… it will sink in and slowly make it's way to your pond over time.

  5. Exciting seeing you make progress on your land. If you don’t have one, you might think about acquiring a small tractor and slasher. All where you have cleared will shoot up regrowth when it rains. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🦘👍

  6. It's exciting stuff. It never ceases to amaze me how machinery in the right hands can transform the lay of the land.
I studied soil management at uni as I needed to improve the land on my farm when I took it over. The make up of my soil is identical to yours. May I suggest that before you plant anything on your land that you take soil samples from each of your sections to determine the pH and mineral content. This will determine what to plant in each place. I would expect to see a big difference from the soil at the top to the one at the bottom which is likely to be more acidic ad you have heavy metal present. You will get less heartache and failures with your plantings and save you a lot of money in the long run. A comprehensive home kit might suffice you if you don't want to send the soil samples for laboratory testing.
There are many natural ways to amend the soil to make it fertile and suitable for growing all fruit, vegetables and trees.

  7. You mentioned you might want to keep chickens on your land. If I recall correctly, you also own a vacant space across the road from your house. Could you keep chickens there? Safer in terms of predators and for feeding the hens. Just a though as you obviously know what will work the best. Hens are wonderful but everything wants to eat them.

  8. You probably know this already so it might be a reminder. 🙂 This winter with the rains, pay attention to the areas where you get standing water. Might show areas you may want to avoid planting unless in raised beds. Terraces are a great idea as it slows water and provides flatter areas for planting. Maybe see where the strongest winds come from and plant a wind break. Winter rains are often followed by strong winds in the mountains. Sounds like you have some great plans for the land and we will happily watch your progress. Cheers.
