5 Things We Appreciate Living As Expats In Portugal (A Better Retirement!)

It’s time for a reality check! We take a fun look at the differences we are experiencing – and truly appreciate – in our new, day-to-day life, after retiring to Portugal and living as an expat in Portugal, here on the beautiful island of Madeira, for over 8 months now.

We love it! And we think YOU will too!

Whether retiring to Portugal, living and working abroad here on Madeira or anywhere else in Portugal – or just travelling through – there are things they do differently than what we were always used to back in N. America.
We say, THEY DO IT BETTER!

  1. Two month ago I subscribed to your channel. After 5 months now in Coimbra coming from troubleful Tigre in Argentina I most appreciate the 99% security here. But there are lots of graffity damages to property and some iron bar "decorations" which I don´t like. Madeira is apparently better. I am at an age in which I lived nearly everywhere thanks to my income & assets. (New York, Alexandria, & Miami in the US & a very nice house & school in Hamburg, etc.) Now as a widower since 2017 I chose Portugal, & I´m studying Madeira seriously since 2018. I´ll visit the more westward region up to Calheta 4 Xmas or in 2023. I´m very afraid of mudslides like that disastous one of 2010. The only way to avoid them is the "banana line", 200 to 400 meters above sea level. As a lithuanian EU citizen I can choose. ¡Thank you very much 4 your very informative and nice videos! 😃

  2. In early November 2021, my wife and I (and 4 other couples) were on a Viking repositioning cruise (Barcelona to San Juan) which stopped in Madeira for the day. I was overwhelmed by the cleanliness of Funchal. The people were so friendly and courteous and helpful. It was nice to visit a city where there wasn't graffiti on walls. I was so very happy that we had the chance to visit. I would love to fly back to Madeira and spend 10 days exploring the island. Outside of Funchal, the countryside was so pretty and once again so clean. How is the medical system?

  3. Coffee. Yes. There's nothing that I love more about Europe than this. On so many levels. One is that it's almost impossible to get a bad cup of coffee in Europe. I remember pulling into an Autostrada gas station in Italy. And getting coffee from a vending machine, which freshly ground some Lavazza beans and made a perfectly good Cafe au Lait for under two Euros. Secondly, there is no such thing as a $6 caramel double shot macchiato venti in Europe (unless you go to Starbucks — ugh) Grab a Galao and a pastel de nata and you have instant bliss for under 4 Euros. Lastly, I love the fact that the streets aren't filled with people drinking coffee out of huge take-out cups. People sit and drink their coffee, socialize with friends and relax (as you say). The question is : Do you miss the Timbits? 😉 On another subject, one thing I also have to say is what I love about Portugal is the niceness of the people. As an American who lives within an hour of Windsor, Ontario, the Portuguese are sort of like the Canadians of Europe. In our eyes, no people are nicer, more patient and more tolerant than the Portuguese. During our three weeks on the mainland last year, we did at least one egregious parking error that the locals greeted with nothing more than an understanding smile. The patience in line is just one example of their good nature.

  4. I cant get over how young and relaxed you both look! Yes, we just happened to be in Sintra when there was a festival. It was the best! like being in the Game of Thrones. There was even live jousting!! Doug i noticed a Fender (maybe?) guitar in the background for the first time. Do they have Fado in Madeira like they do in Lisbon?

  5. I love the "Prato do Dia" (plate of the day) that the local restaurants have, they usually include appetizer, main course, wine or beer, dessert with an espresso for an all-inclusive price of 8 or 9 euros. Great values to be had! 😋

  6. G’day Doug and Monique
Love the aroma of fresh coffee in morning at the local cafe
It would be great to relax, have a coffee and maybe play a game of chess of backgammon.
Take a ticket and standing in line waiting for your turn is great. It will take a little getting use to again, especially coming from a fast paced environment.
I remember traveling around Europe it was hard to find a place to eat between 1pm and 3pm, because everyone shutdown. Do the offices also shut down for lunch

Always enjoy your content and great graphics, look forward to next week

    Cheers Andrew and Monica

  7. We LOVE your videos ! We especially appreciate your analytical and straightforward approach and transparency as you assist others wishing to learn about moving and living in Madeira – something we plan to do VERY soon. Keep up the wonderful work you are doing. It's more appreciated than you can imagine. Cheers and best wishes from Toronto Canada 🙂

  8. Nice to know there exists a place on this earth where people respect each other, live harmoniously, have fun, behave in a structured and disciplined manner, take it easy, and free from violence and hate. What a great place to be in and enjoy life. Thanks for the nice video, and enlightening the viewers.

  9. Hi 70 yr old retired Canadian I’ve been thinking about Portugal for a few years. Hesitant because I live alone and wondering if my hesitation is justified or if I’m creating my roadblocks. Enjoy your videos very much. Have a fabulous weekend

  10. From my British perspective… The Portuguese have a much higher sense of community, greater hospitality, far more generosity of spirit, more laidback, and proud of their country – language, history, and culture in general.
