Sienna, one of the things that really freaks me out is that I'm 62 years old from the UK. I have never, never, EVER known anyone who has owned a gun. Why on earth would they want to? Why would someone want to own a weapon that could potentially kill someone? What is there defence? Why? Just please tell me…
Yeah having lived in three continents and one region I can attest Americans would find the points he’s making questionable I guess. A lot of this is solved by an introduction to cultural relativity and actually travelling the world and keeping many friends from civilised places outside the one where you were socialised especially south of the equator.
Hardly anyone in Europe has guns but those that do are highly regulated and there’s hardly any gun deaths. In the UK not even police walk around with guns.
What Americans might trivialise as fighting words are seen to be against human rights and the prohibition on that behaviour is both socially condemned and enshrined into law including South Africa for example.
His point about social housing is that public housing or low cost homes are mixed in with the areas America usually reserved for residences of the wealthy. Vouchers can’t override housing discrimination in America
In the US not everyone has paid vacation, not to mention paid maternity or even paternity leave, but in OECD countries a minimum of three /four weeks is mandate by law. Many countries that aren’t rich also have these leave PAID and Mandatory annually after a few months
The death panels, health care slander is the height of nonsense. Even as a foreign student in the UK you’re entitled to FREE health care. Every other industrialised country except the US does this. Once again even poor countries provide health care to all their citizens along with FREE or highly subsidised child care and other social services. Those who wish to pay can do so but no one has to go bankrupt or die because they need an operation or mental health therapy.
Maybe you know all this, and the point you make about his age either because those things are still in force in the US, but I couldn’t be sure whether you’re being sarcastic or funny when you hit the pause button bc I’m voice dictating these notes while doing something else 😅💕
I'd lowkey love to have aconvo with you about all these and how it is different here compared to the US.
As someone who has met a LOT of Americans, unfortunately all 6 of these are true. They think we don't have freedom of speech here in Croatia and that they are the only ones who have it. It is annoying. How dare anyone talk to me about what my country is IN my country. Granted, maybe they were all from Florida and Idaho.
