#6 Our search for Land in Central Portugal – how to choose the right property

Hi friends!

Please bear with me as I am still not very comfortable speaking in front of the camera, but I really wanted to chat about land search in Central Portugal and I am very excited to show you the properties I am considering! Tune in for part 2 – tips for buying land in Portugal, coming up in a few days! I had to split it into 2 parts, or else this video would be wayyy too long!

Who are we?

We are Fenia, Adam and Odin and we are searching for land in Portugal to start our little farm.

We are planning to install greywater systems, raise happy animals, be self-sufficient in electricity and water, plant food forests, build eco-structures like cob houses and treehouses, and much more. Our biggest goal is to have our own bakery on the land and serve farm-to-table meals.

We have been exploring most of Portugal with our caravan during the summer and we decided to rent a place to stay warm and dry during the winter! Traveling alone with a toddler (and a young dog!) might seem pretty crazy, and it is indeed very challenging, but for me, it was the only way to make sure I find a place that suits our needs and head towards self-sufficiency!

I think that documenting our journey from looking for a place until reaching our self-sufficiency goals can be interesting and inspiring, especially to fellow mommies! Becoming mothers doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our dreams and live a “regular life”. You can achieve anything you set your mind to, even if you have (young) kids!

  1. Really good post. Great to hear about how you came to Portugal, your scouting visits of different parts of the country and types of property in your search. I liked your second property.

Good to start young if you can see your way clear financially, establishing a smallholding which will involve much of your time and energy to develop over many years. For that sort of money in the UK you would barely afford the 10% deposit on a very average town house with a tiny garden.

  2. Good luck with your search. Planning is a nightmare in Portugal. My first two kids were born and grew up in Portugal. The local schools were good and both girls (now grown up) are tri-lingual. Recently, with my youngest two girls, we spent two weeks in the summer in Benfeita. A beautiful part of Portugal, but too isolated and (in my view) the alternative community was not too well integrated with the locals. The piscina fluvial at Coja was great in the summer. Eucalyptus is very invasive in that region too.
