We made a mistake and repointed the stone walls in the bathroom of our old Portuguese farm house with a product called HL5 (and sand). This is an artificial hydraulic (in water) setting product with additives and potentially up to 20% of cement.
This is bad for buildings like ours which is made of stone and has barely any foundations. So in this episode we correct our mistake.
We also share a bunch of information we’ve learned about lime and show a couple of ways of working with it: hot mixing lime mortar and slacking quicklime into lime putty.
So sit back and watch us work – again.
Hot Lime Mix Ratio
——————————
1 part quicklime (cal viva in Portuguese)
3 parts sharp sand
1.5 parts water

The Story So Far
—————————
My name’s Guy. My wife Kylie and I bought this abandoned stone farm building and ¾ acre of land in the autumn of 2020 and have been slowly (but surely) restoring it and bringing it back to its former glory. We’re doing a lot of the work ourselves – having tacked 3 previous property renovations in the UK DIY style – and we’re trying to use as many natural, traditional and eco friendly materials as possible while we build a semi-self-sufficient homestead.
We’ve spent a bit of time setting up a no-dig veg garden and building some temporary accommodation (a bell tent on a large circular deck) so we can live on our land while we tackle the building project. Stay tuned to see what we get up to and follow our progress.
