BUILDING Our First Ever Compost Toilet – Tiny house living in Portugal | Ep.05

We have finally upgraded and made our own compost toilet!

This is our very first and our very own compost toilet and are very proud of it! We had to sue fresh wood and we don’t have dry wood available to us nearby and also, it is so much more expensive! We made a huge saving by working with fresh pine wood.

We had to make it three times in order to get the (almost) perfect prototype but are very happy with it! No more in just a bucket!

We bought a ruin earlier this year but have needed to sort some things out before we could actually be comfortable, such as electricity and water. After weeks of that being sorted, we finally were able to transport our container home to our property and therefore, have a suitable temporary accommodation on-site to start work on the ruin. Finally, we as a couple, fulfilled our dream to buy a property in Portugal.

We left the UK between lockdowns to buy a farm in Portugal and plan to renovate it slowly to its former glory but with our personal touches. While our company is on standby, we thought making our mark and invest our money in something that could only grow, under the current times we are living, would be the best decision for us.

Follow our journey in Portugal while we renovate our abandoned house. We would love to know your thoughts while we are documenting our life in Portugal. Maybe you know about the materials we’ll use, have been there before, know about native trees, etc.

Who’s The Indigo Escape?

We are Omar and Andrea and have been together for about 13 years. We met in Brighton, UK, and are originally from South Africa and Venezuela. We have run a small tour company since 2011 in the south of England. Unfortunately due to the pandemic, we had to close our business for now. Therefore, we decided to bring forward our plan to move to Portugal with a tight budget.
We don’t have any other source of income but wanted to show how it is possible to relocate, get your dream home, and with a lot of work, get to have the lifestyle you want in the countryside.
