We’re escaping the cold and chasing the sun to Portugal this month, to discover some amazing wines from the country’s northern vineyards!
First up, from the Douro region, we have Lavradores De Feitoria. As the name suggests, this is a union of farmers from across Douro combining a traditional approach with modern coordination to create truly excellent wines. They bring us a couple of fantastic wines in Cheda Tinto and Cheda Branco!
The red is vibrant and full of plum and cherry on the nose, with a bright palate of elegant tannins and balanced acidity.
The white wine is fruity with notes of pineapple and mango in the aroma which carries through to a tropical palate with additional notes of citrus and a pleasant minerality.
Founded in 1765 by the Silva Reis family, Real Companhia Velha is the oldest winemaker in Portugal. The family have used their 265 years of winemaking knowledge to produce exquisite Douro wines. Porca de Murça Branco is a young white wine with floral notes and hints of lime and white peach on the nose. The palate is led by stonefruit and white currant acidity with a persistent fruity finish.
Porca de Murça Tinto is a lighter style Douro red. The leading notes for this wine are red berries and cherry which are backed by rounded tannins and an excellently structured body.
Miranda Família bring a brilliant white wine in Atuar. Using a blend of local grape varieties, Atuar has a bright, citrus colour with an aroma of fruity and floral notes leading to vibrant acidity on the palate. As with all Miranda Família wines, this wine was produced using sustainable practices and organic and biodynamic fertilising alternatives making each bottle environmentally sound and socially just.
Last but certainly not least, from the Dão region and the Holy River Estate, we have Carlos Lucas Vinhos and their wine Cota 700. You can expect aromas of mulberry, blackberries and subtle notes of wild herbs leading into dark berries on the palate in this appealing and fresh red wine.
This is just a quick overview of the wines we’re bringing you this month. As always, your copy of Glug will be right by your side to offer further details on the different regions and wineries as well as more interesting articles from across the world of wine! But if you want to know more, you’ll just have to order a box.
Cheers!
