When Renovating, Things Don’t Always Go To Plan | Knocking down Courtyard Walls #57

Rain may have stopped play for a few days but we got to catch up on time lost. Renovating doesn’t always go to plan but I’ve learnt when to move people on when I sense things could go wrong. Budget is tight and we can’t afford to waste. Fortunately there’s always an answer. Buying and selling houses is quite stressful, especially in another country. Most people only move once or twice in their lives. So it’s really important to stay positive, in control and importantly, we must enjoy the journey. Renovating is not for the faint hearted. Learning new skills and tackling problems is rewarding and sometimes you got to stop, regroup and push on. It all works out in the end.

  1. Hi,56yr old skilled labourer available, lol, cheers great vids,Thankyou. I believe you would have already considered this, but a roof of glass/skylight, above landing in the central area would look great, though expensive.

  2. Hi Andy great video and work. We are doing a old house up in the hills of East Algarve. Have you got any tips on a good tile supplier. We are just starting to tile the outside patio area. I will keep watching you videos and learning.
    Thanks john

  3. Realy like to see How the garden and house is to transform into something Nice and classy
I am Wondering How the hard of the house is going to look like whit that strange staties..!
    Keep in the good work.👍👍

  4. Hi Andie, we love your channel, you are a very positive, focused, happy , constructive and clear thinking man, not afraid to get your hands dirty to achieve your goals. We really missed your mid week video. But we understand fully. We have lived a similar life, living as comfortably as possible with our 4 young children, on the building site, except we never videoed our journey, there was no you tube back then, or even sadly, an affordable video camera ……That’s why we love following your journey ! From the comfort our lounge chairs here in Australia 🇦🇺.. keep up your great work! 🏆🥇💞

  5. I feel like your shoulders must be aching after swinging that sledge hammer at the concrete! It's already looking so much better since you've opened up the courtyard area, and improved the view!

  6. Hi Andrew, wonderful rain to fill the dams! Awesome view now wall is lower👏Tip.. Our,(now sold) orange orchard has wide deep..ish well around each tree extending to eventually the leaf drip area. So any rain would fill it up. Any old straw to mulch it, and get info on the during the year feeding programme from your local garden centre expert. We had Navel oranges in Winter and Valencia in Spring. Lemon trees a must have. Just think fruit juices and muffins! Nothing to beat walking outside and picking an 🍊 off your own tree and enjoying the sweet flavour. Don't forget garlic chives and sprinkle marigold seeds among the veggies to keep bugs away!🦋🌈 Life is soo good when you grow things.

  7. Andy… I cannot agree more. If your gut feeling isn't right, send so-called professionals of. Don't even let them start working. I didn't do it and it took 6 months and 3 different crews to renovate a relatively small bathroom. I wish I had seen this video before. Love your channel.

  8. Great to watch the ongoing progress in the courtyard. It’s going to be amazing with that view. Good luck with your planting. That will be so nice to have year round oranges.😁🍊

  9. Are you planting veg in those lovely boxes? My feeling on the veg planting is that the boxes are not big enough for the amount you have and spacing needed between, please watch veg growing tips on here before or they may die off, you also will need drainage in the boxes, it’s all trial error to start with though..
Also I really like the wall lower so you get a view,..

  10. It's definitely good to get the rain, but I must admit our summer this year has been overrun with water. Third wettest summer season (our normal) since records began and more coming. Your renovating jobs are coming along. Great idea to get trees and vegies in whilst waiting.

  11. Hi Andy, a request: when you plant your trees, please dig the hole much bigger than most people do. This will make their start in life so much easier as their little roots find their way. It will pay great dividends.

  12. Hello Andy!! One thing I always comment on: whenever I see Portuguese Workers doing hard manual labour, they never wear protective gear – goggles🥽 hard hats, 👷🏻masks or safety harnesses🤦‍♀️So it was reassuring to see you give your work mate mask and goggles!! Another interesting video. The landscape looks dramatically different after all the much needed rain 🌧 Ironically it was blue sky and sunshine 🌞 in the UK!! 👩

  13. Andy, my good friend flips houses. He has done it for more than 20 years. Some years he does a few, some years none at all. He went through four real estate agents over the years. He finally found one that understood how he worked and specifically hooked him up with properties that suited his needs. This guy also knew some really good and reliable trades people. He pays his trades well and wants them in and out as fast as possible. He contracts plumbers and roofer everything else he doea. The guys his realtor hooked him up with are top notch. The realtor knows, the faster the house gets finished the quicker he will be shopping for another. But….it did take four agents to find one that worked well with him.

  14. Hi Andy! My husband and I enjoy watching your adventures and work! Just a question – the pillar you are thinking of moving, what about just making it taller so the roofline is out of the view? or maybe moving it AND making it just a bit taller to open up the view? Just a thought.

  15. Just a tip , a gardener gave me was, before planting citrus trees, just check they have grown quite root bound in the pots , before planting. They get a better start in the ground being stronger root system.

  16. A courtyard can be idilic and to have that beautiful view as well is an absolute winner. Personally i would open up that view as much as possible. Well done Andy. I also want to thank you for bringing positivity and hope. Its fun to be part of your journey 😃
