My Cost Breakdown of Home Ownership and Renting In Foz do Arelho & Caldas Da Rainha Portugal

Happy Friday everyone!

Are you torn between renting or buying a home in Portugal?

When my family and I first moved to Portugal, I followed the recommendations made by everyone and rented our first place. It gave us the time to figure out a few things.

First, we had the time to decide if we even liked the area/city. It seems like the majority of us have either visited Portugal on a one or two week scouting trip before moving or tons have just up and moved without even visiting the country! By renting, it gives you the time to get a good feel of the area without locking you down into a long term commitment of purchasing a home.

Second, it gave us time to find the perfect home to purchase. Finding the right home is already hard enough in your native country let alone in a foreign one! Homes here aren’t the same as the homes back in the States or wherever you come from. There were things that we needed to look for that I would have never thought about back in the States such as mold issues or structural damage. Home inspections aren’t widely common here in Portugal and even though I had one done, it was not nearly as thorough as they are back in the States. Not to mention, they are not cheap either! I paid twice as much here in Portugal for a very mediocre job.

Lastly, it just gave us flexibility. Buying a home is a very permanent thing. Ok, yes, buying a home doesn’t mean you’re stuck with it forever, but it’s not something that you can just up and pack your bag once your year long lease has ended. Once you buy a home, you, of course, can sell it, but it may take weeks, months or even years to sell a home. Not necessarily an ideal situation for some people.

Ok ok, I’m not here trying to persuade you to rent. Obviously, I purchased and didn’t continue to rent.

As you can watch from my video, the price of renting versus buying are practically the same thing. Yes, you can find a cheaper place to rent, but you can also find a cheaper place to buy. There are so many pros and cons that one person can make. So it’s best for you to sit down with your family to decide which path works best for you.

See you in the next video 📹

  1. Good to hear that utilities are low in a new home. WIll be there to check out Caldas and nearby towns during my 2 months trip to Portugal, in a few days.

  2. Hi Josie. Love your channel. I am from Canada and moving to Portugal in October with my wife and 10 month old. We don't know much about silver coast. But we are thinking of renting a place near Porto first. Do you know a realtor that you would recommend to help us find a rental? Thank you.

  3. Hi, Josie I'm Portuguese and my wife is Korean I have a home in Foz do Arelho and would love to move there in the near future, I'm trying to convince my wife to move without any luck. She hpas never been there But I know she would love it. She loves the beach, warm weather, an of course seafood.

  4. How welcoming are the Portuguese? Do you feel comfortable there? My wife and I arrived in Maryland from Korea 12 years ago and she says people here still treat her poorly. Thanks in advance for any insights.

  5. Hi Josie, great video … wow on your current utility bills. We moved to Caldas last August to a 2 1/2 year old 3 bedroom bungalow. Our water bill is 3 times your monthly bill, there are only 2 of us in the house, I don’t use the dish washer unless we have guests and our washing machine is used twice a week. Our electric bill is double and we have no heating installed in the house. We are also with Meo for internet and again paying double your monthly bill…. You have managed to get some great deals….very envious 😀😀

  6. We just bought our second house in Portugal (guest house for family and friends) and we love the silver coast region. We chose Obidos, only we visit Caldas all the time. Have you been to Lourinha yet? Or the Buddha Eden Park? Highly recommend both. The kids will love the dinosaurs and it's a great place for a family picnic. Or if you visit the city centre and you like chicken burgers…Terra Terra is a must. Your kitchen looks beautiful and lol…yup, we have been to Ikea plenty of times too. Any suggestions for activities in the surrounding area? We've been exploring and collecting places to eat and things to see for our guests when they visit. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Hi,I have recently been started watching your videos, all videos are really informative.
We are also looking to relocate from England in near future.
    Your home is beautiful ❤️
