Is the Kremlin losing control of the war narrative? | Conflict Zone

As the Kremlin began its war against Ukraine, it forced the closure of Russia’s last independent media outlets. The aim, of course, was to secure absolute control of the public narrative about the invasion.

But did it work? And what about the people defying that control?

This week, Tim Sebastian speaks to Ekaterina Kotrikadze, news editor and presenter on one of the last channels to be shut down – Dozhd TV, known internationally as TV Rain.

She fled Russia in the first week of March and now co-chairs a program of news and analysis on Youtube.

Asked by Tim Sebastian whether Russia was returning to full strength, Soviet style repression, Kotrikadze said “I think it’s even worse.”

Conflict Zone is Deutsche Welle’s top political interview.

Every week, our hosts Tim Sebastian and Sarah Kelly are face to face with global decision-makers, seeking straight answers to straight questions, putting the spotlight on controversial issues and calling the powerful to account.

  1. And russians don't understand that they don't have a SINGLE INDEPENDENT news, media, press, tv-channel in russia. Only goverment media. What the f…! So North-Korea, and russians beliebe that! What!

  2. Why is this Tim Sebastian so aggressive? Half of the interview it felt like he was pushing her to excuse herself for being Russian, personifying that very same scornful attitude, that Russians abroad – many of them opposing Putin and the war – have to face at the moment. Remarkable, that she stayed so composed.

  3. We figure it all out. Each time Amer and France call someone a dictator I am 100 💯 sure this person is the greatest and the most compassionate who's doing the right thing. This how USA France assassinate the character of great LEADERS who choose not to be corrupted like them.

  4. She says, This aggression is only Putin's games and not the wishes of the Russian Citizens, but I wonder why Putinh's popularity pre-war was only 61%, while post-war his popularity has risen to 87% does it indicate the innocence of Good Russians? It does not make sense

  5. We don't hold All Russians responsible, but we expect Russians to openly defy a dictator and fascist leader. To risk aggressively for the world we as humans desire… 🌍 🌎.

Genocide being fostered by an apathetic, ignorant, uninformed, willingly misinformed population. That's repeating history.

  6. Ekaterina is so conflicted that she cannot think straight. Any Russian who wants to oppose their police state should pack up and head for Ukraine and make that the New Russia. If every serious Russian moved to Ukraine, only the Putin crowd would remain.

  7. I met Putin at a private dinner function. A very good luncheon.. Mr P looked like he didn't have a care in the world. Yeah , it's fair to say , l liked Putin from the start

  8. Sadly she is in a huge minority in Russia and this is the problem. There is far more braindead individuals that follow blindly like the sheep they are. Ekaterina is a rare piece of brave work.

  9. I felt the interviewer placed a lot of blame on the interviewee personally, which was a bit hostile. Put her on the defensive, yes, but don't kick her when she's down.. bad form

  10. The "west" should be hunting for someone in Russia, a real Russian citizen, to be ready when Putin leaves (or when he dies). Forget what is happening now, and concentrate on the future. Visualize Russia in the next decade, and work on it. John M. Hill, author. NEW SLOGAN: Russia needs HELP !

  11. Great idea to help Russians living in the West to perform concerts etc to protest Putin – I've always disagreed with sports boycotts and bans. Sports should be like the space program (was) — immune from current political pressures

  12. Listening to her, it occurs that she could just as easily be talking about the US. Just this week we had a "journalist" call for the jailing of other journalists who are not towing the Democrat line.
