6 Months Living In Portugal – Is Retiring HERE Still Affordable For Expats? (You May Be Surprised)

In 2022 and beyond, is living in Portugal still an affordable option for expats to retire, move to, or work remotely in?

In October, 2021, we achieved financial independence in North America and retired early at age 50, while moving to Portugal. We sold everything, and downshifted to our “Second Half of Life.” We are here on Madeira Island, Portugal. Now in 2022, we share our 6-month average monthly cost to live in Portugal. We hope you find it helpful and a little interesting, as you pursue your “2nd Half of Life.”

  1. Greetings from Australia 🙂 I just cant believe how cheap utilities and rent in where you live compared to Australia. Here everything is at least 4 times more expensive compared to Portugal and since gas (petrol) and groceries gone up most things are even more expensive in Australia. eg a lettuce sold for just $3 now is $12, one litre petrol was $1.40 and now almost $2.35 for same and list goes on and on. The cost of living in Australia is well and truly more than Scandinavia, Hong Kong, Japan and many other countries. From 1 July 2022 electricity price will go up by at least 18% but inflation is about 5% and a few months ago inflation was between 2 to 3%.

  2. This was super informative and thanks for giving us (future expats) an idea of the average cost of living. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Keep up the great content!

  3. Again, awesome information from the two of you!
Doce Vila is very nice. Would you consider that home with it's utility upgrades an average or median in Medeira? Or more towards the outer part of the bell curve of home offerings?

  4. G’day Doug and Monique

Always look forward to your videos each week, I love the graphics and it was great to see the break down over the last 6 months. In Las Vegas now we are spending between $4600 and $5000 monthly and now since inflation is running around 8.6% a middle range for fish and chips at the Pub and a couple of beers is $100.00. Most mid range meals for two is $60-$75,
Can’t wait to join you on the island of Hawaii/Madeira

    Thank you for sharing
    Cheers!

  5. I will be preparing my D7 application over the summer. I'm so excited to be moving to Madeira in January, 2023. I'd love to meet you someday.Congrats on your new home. I think I will try to purchase a flat if I can after 6 months as well. Since I am older, a mortgage might be trickier. I have faith that my realtor will help me figure that out. In the meantime, I plan to start my apartment search at the end of July. Thank you for making these helpful videos. Obrigada!!

  6. I am a single female retiree in Florida. Portugal was on my radar long before I moved to Florida. I love your detailed videos and I plan to visit the entire country in October. However, family members have sent me news stories about the earthquakes in Portugal. Have you experienced any trimmers? What's the government saying about possibly of the country experiencing a major quake? I hope someone in Portugal can give me some idea of what's really happening regarding the quakes!

  7. Hello Doug and Monique, I love watching your videos every week with my first cup of coffee. The video quality, value and content of your channel are superb. Thank you for your effort to inform your channel followers. 😄❤️👏👏👏👏. Have a happy retirement.

  8. Thank you for yet another excellent and informative video. The averaging gives a good guideline projection on the expenses. One question related to finance, investment and money management. Since you guys are not in the category of retirees living on Pension / retirement income obviously must be drawing from your savings and investment. If you have any good investment tips on how you generate that sustainable income reasonably safely (we all know that no investment plan is guaranteed other than in Money Market that earns 0.50%) and investment ideas that you practice that would be helpful. Happy Retirement in your new Home.

  9. Hi Doug and Monique. Thanks for another excellent video. We really appreciate you taking the time to share this really useful information with your followers. If you are still looking for suggestions for future videos, would you please consider one that covers your used car buying experience on Madeira, including how you found and chose a dealer, the buying process and, if you don't mind, roughly how much you paid for the car you purchased. Cheers!

  10. We just spent 2 weeks on the beautiful island of Madeira, hoping to find a new place to live, we found it better than Hawaii, cost, and living wise… we stayed in Cao Vincente, Porto Moniz, and Funchal… we Retired to the Woodlands Texas, from Massachusetts, to enjoy no state income tax, and no snow to shovel, ever… however the prices here, for everything are skyrocketing… we really enjoy watching your videos, and pray we too can find our way back to paradise…

  11. Love your videos! I've wanted to up and move to Portugal for years now. But we have 3 children, 11, 13 and 15. I know you both did it after your children were grown. But if you could do it all over again, would you have waited until now or moved when your kids were younger? Thank you.
