I had a very impactful experience of loss recently during my travels in Portugal, with the events that unfolded leaving an indelible mark on me.
Is loss always a bad thing? It depends on how we choose to view it, I think. Perhaps there are reasons unknown to us why we had to experience that loss, and lessons to be learned from it.
I was blown away by what this particular series of events showed me. What started as a horrible incident culminated in a completely different outlook on the world.

You are an amazing storyteller! I have watched Nathaniel for many years and I really see where he gets it. Not taking anything away from either of you. It is a beautiful family trait from what I can see that was passed down the generations.
You have a very raw, vulnerable masculine perspective that we dont often see in this world full of toxic masculinity. I am a 44F and I love seeing the world through your eyes. Keep making videos. We need them!!
joining the old man!
Welcome to Portugal! People tend to be very kind and helpful. I am glad you are experiencing some of the good things in my culture. I lived in Coimbra for many years and it is still one of my favourite cities. I am sure you already know this but you can quickly go to the beach from there by visiting Figueira da Foz if you want (there’s a train). I have to say that as a Portuguese living in the UK, if this happened to me in the UK, it is unlikely anyone would help in this way. That’s something I really miss about Portugal.
Seems that country loves you guys 🍀
Cannot imagine this happening in America
After a few years of traveling by train for uni each week and several forgotten tubes with drawings, I learned to never have more than one bag. 😅 If there were two I made sure to tie them up together. Because there is no way I can forget my only bag, but it is so easy to forget an extra one.
It was God. Thank you Jesus
So why you crying
So happy you got your bag. Love this video.
What a happy ending!!!! I wish those trains had stop announcements like metros do. If you aren't SUPER familiar, it's very difficult to know which stop you're at a lot of the time.
I just found you through your son who I found through Nate and Kara. Such an inspiration to see couples my age doing what I’ve only been dreaming of.
Love your attitude and approach. Looking back, I’ve come to understand that “negative” experiences were, in the longer view, ultimately positive. I learned, I grew, they brought opportunity. I apply that to today and now trust that, in time, The positive aspects of a “negative” experience will be revealed in time. Enjoy the wonders of “being,” to living in a time of vulnerability that makes you receptive to all around you. ❤️
Gees I have that fobia all the time.
Great content. Im subscribing.
As a full time traveler this is my biggest fear in the world! I know that feeling you get up your spine when you realize something like that. I also loved that you weren't afraid to be vulnerable in this video. Subscribed!
Oh my goodness! I know exactly how you felt during this entire time. I did lose my passport once as it was stolen from me during the flight probably when I was sleeping. The person next to me stole my cash and passport and I was stuck in the terminal UAE just like Tom Hanks. I was stuck there for 24 hours. It was awful! Another time, I had some of my very expensive belongings in my suitcase and I never do that. I normally have these expensive items like you have in my backpack because I am a digital nomad and I travel with hard drives, laptops, cameras like you, etc. I just wasn't thinking and I put some of these items in my large suit case that went into the luggage storage below on a bus in Costa Rica. We got off the bus and thought that the driver would hand us the luggage but he sped off! He must have forgot that we had luggage. My boyfriend started to chase the bus and I was running after my boyfriend. This man tackled my boyfriend because he thought my boyfriend robbed me (my boyfriend is Latino and looked like a local hahaha). The man was being so nice and trying to help but instead, he made the situation worse because my boyfriend now couldn't catch the bus. Well, the man offered to have my boyfriend hop on his motorcycle with him and they chased the bus. They finally caught up to the bus and got my bag back! I did give the nice Costa Rican man with the motorcycle money and he did accept. Hahahahha! You are right that there really are some nice people in the world. I was crying and I felt so sick that I had lost everything in that bag but I only had that feeling for about an hour. I feel so sorry for you that you had that feeling overnight and had to wait for the train to return! I will bet that you didn't expect to have all of your belongings back. What a huge relief! By the way, losing your passport overseas is such a pain and especially to have to get an emergency one. I watched your video wondering if you would have to go through that painful process but I'm so happy for you that you got it back!
Let this be a lesson, NEVER travel without your important documents and cash ON your PERSON…
Uh, touching video. Thanks. I never thought I'll be moved to tears for some stranger who lost and found passport. Glad for you. Praise God !
Love hearing stories like this. The world is not all doom and gloom, as there are still tons of great people in this world. But man… Losing your passport + camera gear in another country sounds like a whole new level of anxiety.
Yes there’s a good people still in the world 🌎 but once they’re gone ….earth is no longer worth to live ‘“.
I was so moved by this – thank you for sharing! looking forward to your future videos
Fantastic story! I have traveled in Europe and found that people are much kinder and ask for less. <3
Just stumbled upon your channel after watching Nathaniel's latest video, and WOW. I guess being an incredible storyteller runs in the family
Thank you for sharing your story. We will be following your journey as we dream of such a life.
Goodness me I don't know you, have never seen one of your videos, and yet I was so relieved and happy for you to have your things returned so whole. My God m
What a heart warming story thank you for sharing.
That is Portugal……
I felt your fear and your relief. I have lost my wallet and phone so many times and always get them back. I feel so undeserving of such great fortune. The world has way more many people who want to do what is right than we often assume.
Shalom! I was moved to tears from this video. You are an incredible mix of masculinity, sensitivity and great vulnerability. You have an incredible family and should be very proud. PLEASE make more videos…..
Wow, u are really lucky. Always keep valuable items on your person or strapped to your person. Never put it aside because it's easy to forget. And don't bring so many bags. Yes, whenever unexpectedly good things happen, the view of the world changes to positive (lighter, feel good about everybody that you want to give gifts, feel love for everybody, peaceful.). But just 1 bad incident, even a small one, will change it the other way (totally upset & negative). Some strangers can do some very unexpectedly kind things & also some strangers can do some upsetting things like shoving past or brushing past you without even a word from behind. The good feeling is just that moment. Once a crappy person comes along… everything changes again. It's not safe to say that everyone is kind & good, & not correct to say that everyone is evil.

In life …we are meant to experience and feel a large array…. It is all inter connected… I realize most instinctively know this…
I’m so grateful this all ended in such positivity, PLEASE keep uploading videos. You have a very special way of sharing life. Good luck finding the property of your dreams x
Amazing presentation of a true story and thank you for sharing this wonderful experience on the You Tube…the Lord is in control of everything
How are you both such amazing film makers and story tellers? So happy for your and for this channel and your move to Europe. Looking forward to watching more.

hi..new subscriber here… 🙂
Beautiful story.
I’m so moved by your story. There are angels in this world.
Lovely video, I followed links from Kara and Nate to your son, to you. Subscribed to all. I am of similar age and am at a similar point in my life. I am happy, healthy, and make a living doing wehat I do. But I want more. Next year will be interesting.
Thank you so much. It is true that there are angels on our journeys. Reise Engels they call them in German.
I just found your channel (thanks to your son, Nathanial, and Kara & Nate) and I am so happy to have found you early in your YouTube journey. You are a beautiful story teller and I was moved by this video. We have all had similar experiences, but to relive it through your lens was something I needed today. I am excited to move to Portugal with you and your wife, even if it is only via the internet. Who knows what the future will hold? For now, I will watch and live vicariously through you both.
I'm glad I follow Nathaniel Drew and that he led me to you. Your bravery and your vulnerability has inspired me more than you can imagine. Thank you.
Yikes! What a relief to be reassured very quickly that it would be taken care of.
this is funny. i have met cândida's equal and opposite at CP station in lisboa. i guess the world has to stay balanced?
So glad I found your channel! I turn 60 this year. I’ve lived in many different places, including Europe and, for much of my adult life, moved every 2-3 years but, after spending the last 17 years in one home, I’m itching for something new…something different. I’m exited to explore your channel and be inspired to discover my new path.
Choose Faith, ❤️!
I can certainly relate with that feeling! I once lost my passport in an American airport just a few hours before I would catch a plane, and since I am not American it would have been a very complicated situation. Fortunately TSA was very helpful and efficient and I got my passport back with enough time to spare… I framed the final outcome in terms of luck, no need to think of others as good or evil – framing things like that will distort life. Just appreciate the kindness of those that helped and other small gestures, while trying to be kind and respectful as well.
Hola!!
