How did Portugal colonize the Azores?

The land was beautifully forested with an abundance of useable water and had no current residents. The climate was also well equipped for farming, and the explorers were quickly excited by the seemingly endless possibilities this island offered. By 1420, Madeira was already beginning to fill up with new inhabitants and these eager settlers quickly began planting crops such as wheat and sugar cane. These efforts were rewarded with great success and significant support from the Portuguese Crown. Thanks to this, the idea of also colonizing the Azores, quickly became quite a good one.

  1. "Greedy upper class are thing of the past" Are you sure? Who do you think capitalist are? Why do you think US economy is dying while chinese is rising? (just a example). Who do you think is to blame for such a huge gap between rich and poor in the world today, like 10 % of wealthy to 90 % of poor? Thing of the past my ass.. Only names of upper class has charged, otherwise it is still the same and will always be..

  2. As a portuguese I wanna thank you for this video. The content was great, however 2 minor nitpicks, the pronounciation and the names of the islands being displayed wrong on the screen, aside from that it was great.

  3. The story of the discovery of Porto Santo / Madeira by Zarco in1419 was a myth. The Portuguese "discovered" these islands in the previous century but kept this secret as this small fledgling nation would not be in a position to defend (it is rumoured the Romans first came across them). The Azores was probably the same.

  4. Please learn how to properly pronounce Madeira in English. I stopped watching at two minutes in because you kept butchering it. It was worse to listen to than nails on a chalk board.

It only takes a few seconds to plug it into Google….

  5. After watching this video, I'm immediately think of this scenario about sometime before Granada will be conquered, some members of the House of Nasr escaped along with some Muslim and Jewish refugees and established an independent state that is used as base of operation for privateering against Castile, Aragon and Portugal. Will this scenario worked? After all, this island has been known among the Europeans at least around the 14th century. So I see no reason why the peoples from the Emirate of Granada will not heard of this.

  6. @Knowledgia when it comes to modern "historians" unfortunatly we need to verify if they are historians or history revisionists, something i seam to encounter more and more as time goes by, people who intend to change historical events and/or facts that do not match there idiological affiliation, people who change and modify events base on lose or anicdotal evidence, with sources such as " i don't feel like it happened that way", thankfully you (and some other history chanels on youtube) seam to be avoiding to fall into thous pitfalls, but i do hear them every now and than, so i thought i should bring it up just in case, to watch out for thous kind of modern "historians" who in my opinion are an insult to ALL that seek knowledge about history
