Two years ago, nobody would have believed it but them: For the first time in twelve years, the Rugby World Cup will have a brand new team. Chile stormed back from a first-leg loss to snatch qualification from the USA and change a nation’s rugby history forever in the process. So, how did they do it, and what should we expect from the Chile team we’re about to see a lot more of?

The diference between this season en slar is that jaguares xv only can play whit players under 23 years
I am not shocked that playing a more expansive free flowing style would produce more points.
Bonito trabajo, gracias por compartir, espero poder verlo subtitulado en Español… ayudaría a entender la trascendencia del logro en un país con poca cultura e historia en el rugby.
Felicitaciones por el notable trabajo.
Even if it is said that they have no chance with any tier 1 or stuff, when a new team like Chile earn their place in a RWC, whole rugby wins
Chilean rugby is growing. The people love it. Rugby must throw all they have at growing the game in South America it is the perfect market of passionate fans and already boasts solid teams in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and now Chile. Chi chi chi
The interschools derby between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys High in South-Africa is the biggest interschools derby in the entire world. It gets more viewers than domestic league finals in South-Africa. This year was the 104th edition. It would be awesome if you could do an analysis of the most recent match. It is pulsating rugby almost at an test level with a lot on the line. The most recent one has a lot of controversy and drama. This is honestly a shot in the dark but it would make my day if you could this. (The derby is only once in early August every year.) The game is posted on youtube (supersport schools)
It's been so frustrating watching USA Rugby actively decline during the time I've followed the sport. We haven't won a RWC match since 2011.
I'm 16 years old and I'm portuguese. I was one year old when in 2007 at the RWC portugal played the first world cup match. My dream is to see portugal on the rwc and chile has given me hope to fullfill that dream. Muy bien chile!!
Great analysis as ever and I love the comment section- so many Chilean fans! You are an international sensation
Sorry mate, but I'm not enjoying the "advertising" stuff, i might stop watching you…..
Chile is the number one team on planet Earth. Might as well hand them the 2023 World Cup now
Are you not gonna make a video on SAs last game with wales?
Based on Chile and Uraguay's recent success against North American sides and there's now two professional comps on the continent, I'd love to see a Pan American club championship, nothing too big to begin with, just say the major league finalists up against the Superliga finalists of the last year in a quad series or even just a one off, like league's world club challenge. Squidge, you make a great point about cohesion and the Superliga clubs being stacked with their national players, which would help them a lot although I also understand ML has a lot more foreign pros from tier one countries in their teams which could help the major league sides with fewer Eagles or Canucks to even it out in this sense. Also, a full Supaliga video like what you did for ML would be great, based on recent results it seems likes there's a lot of underrated and untapped potential in South American rugby beyond just Argentina and what's particularly interesting is the inclusion of pro teams in tier 3 countries like Colombia and Paraguay and in the future maybe even Mexico. Anyway, great analysis as usual.
oh my god that corner try and conversion. unreal!
America may not have qualified for the Rugby World Cup, but they could win the World Championship Series, America vs Mexico
Shoutout the dream play reference in the sponsor plug
For someone called Gary Gold, the man has the anti-Midas touch. Everywhere the man goes, losses pile up. Thank you Squidge for explaining in detail just how badly he was outcoached. Twice.
USA = MONEY MONEY AND FOREIGNERS PLAYERS. CHILE= MUCH LESS MONEY. REAL CHILEAN PLAYERS AND A GROUP OF BROTHERS.
USA could use a couple months of training together. Everyone plays so flat that catching at pace is a rarity. And let’s not forget we kicked it out the back over and over and over. There’s some selection limitations where no one is really that flexible position ally or isn’t that well rounded either. Surely they’ll beat Portugal but this was a good shock for the team in the long run.
Great vid Squidgy but you missed one vital part – right at the end where the referee nearly made one of the most horrendous reffing calls when he initially blew a penalty against Chile for "not rolling away" when the player was about 2 metres away from the ruck only for it to be overturned when a neck roll was spotted.
"Overdogs"? 😂
So the Americas qualifiers are Argentina, Uruguay & Chile and the U.S.A. now has to be thankful Tonga went through and they don't have to play them in the repechage. Who didn't see this coming for the Eagles? The USRFU and people in denial about the state of the Eagles. The Eagles had a 35 year old fullback. Why, b/c he plays his rugby in S.A.
The current U.S. club national champs play on a public field in a flood plain. This reflects on the USRFU's rugby development and their national team development. They don't care, pure and simple. They would rather roll the dice w/ex-pat dreamers and domestics w/international experience than develop an actual team and domestic rugby.
Compare this to the MLS, who are destined play their soccer on Apple TV, but have stadiums in major cities and develop sides on multiple private fields in these cities.
What has the USRFU accomplished recently? Bankruptcy. And now an embarrassing loss to Chile at home.
Its cool to see more international teams qualify for the RWC, here in New Zealand, more SA and European teams are being in the spotlight over the last 10 years. Maybe if we get more international teams improving, World Rugby extends the RWC qualification spots by 4
Hey squidgy Squidge Squidge, how do you feel about the RFU decision to ban men who pretend to be women playing rugby against actual real women? Now they can go me play rugby against other men who pretend to be women. You see how inclusive rugby is? No men-who-pretend-to-be-women-phobia in rugby, or racism either.
Loved the video! I'd like to see you cover the new Samoan team that won the Pacific cup (Albeit against Aus A and a lackluster Tongan side) They probably aren't world cup worthy but it's been a bit since you talked about them and they seem to be making a comeback especially with tuilaepa out of the prime ministers seat
Vamos Chile!
Maybe morne steyn in the 2021 lions series and dan biggar in the 2015 match vs england were more pressure but apart from that yet another excellent team analysis
Frikken amazing 👏
Look up the Chilean slang word 'weon' and you will love them more.
Taught PE & coached rugby there 2018-2020. Quite confident they were warned by WRU that if things didn't improve they'd reduce funding so this moment means a lot.
Most emotionally invested and naturally athletic students I've taught so far and they are rugby mad. They would spend a month of their summer holidays at Hawkes Bay rugby camp getting better.
If SANZAR collapses, the seth efricans can bugger off as long as we get These Lads in the Super Rugby
Really good but
Go get tackled by a Samoan before giving Chile a chance
What a great analysis not leaving anything out. I cursed and cursed when Jaguares XV lost to Selknam BUT I love Chile going to the RWC. Lemoine, Menezes….I envy Chile and Uruguay. South American rugby has so much more to give. I think for that Argentina needs to have a national pro provincial competition. Jaguares needs to enter the URC and more franchises have to start in Argentina, Brazil and add more from new countries
PLEASE make a video on how bigoted rugby is.
Interesting comment about the cohesion and how the vast majority of the Chile team play for the same club. That was one of the biggest criticisms of Argentina's Jaguares franchise yet it seems to be doing wonders for Chile's national team
Chile v argentina? That should be a spicy affair.
