OFF GRID PORTUGAL: All I wanted for summer was a WATER PUMP 💦

With the summer heat watering the garden has been a struggle, so we finally bought a motorised water pump. But it took us a while to figure out how to work it!

Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi

Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

  1. Oh how I sympathize. It's insanely annoying. Same thing happened to me . That Bass booming from Techno music from miles away that was going on until 4 or 5 am. Surely close neighbours must have heard it and responded? No chance of sleep.

  2. Hi carissa and iwan what will be your next project that you tackle ? My heart went out to you watching you gardening by torchlight you can see how much you love it your always doing something around your farm do you think you will have children one day ? Love your videos too 😊👍⭐️

  3. Next time you try your pump prime it whilst hold a hand over the outlet see if that starts it off better. Some times it’s better to use a hose that goes flat like a fir hose type you put your foot on it and press done whilst starting the engine when you feel the pressure you just slowly lift off your foot. I’ve got two much bigger version of your pump had the same prom until I phoned the manufacturer who told me the correct priming action. Good luck!👍

  4. I felt your pain with the water pump situation! We bought one last week and took us 3 days to finally suss it out and pump water from our dam…so frustrating in this heat but at least we are both sorted now 🙂

  5. So happy that you have your pump working, it must be a huge relief for you both. Your gifts are beautiful and definitely add a special touch to your home! Take super care! Laura 🐶🐶❤️❤️❤️

  6. Good video thanks for the update. I work for a pump company so know a bit about them😁. Suction lift is hard application best pumps for this are screw progressive cavity, best manufacturers are Mono pumps or copies are seepex, netzsch and indian brand roto they can do a 8 meter suction lift. Could also fit a foot valve, this is just a non return valve down at the bottom of the inlet pipe. Gives the pump a chance to start quicker as it does not need to get rid of all the air like your experience with your current pump, with no foot valve. The pump has to create vacuum to pull the water up witch is slow. If you fit a foot valve the pump doesn't have to work as hard. Down side is if the foot valve get blocked or stuck open due to twigs / foreign mater it stops working. Only other option is a submersible pump. Remember to look at the pump curve to make sure you have enough pressure / head to overcome the system losses ie pipe run and elevation of the outlet pipe. Happy to help if you have questions

  7. I'm so glad you got your pump to work! That'll be a game changer if you were previously watering by bucket! That sucks… I murdered 50 baby grape vines due to needing to bucket water. Oops. I had similar pump trauma past year with a small electrical one and I eventually gave up and got a submersible pump and it's bee great. The other one has been banished to my mezzanine, never to be seen again… though I might attempt to repurpose it for irrigation. Anyway, congrats on getting it to work! I felt your pain!

  8. When you tested the pump at Nicks the pump was below the water line so the pipe running from the water to the pump was full. At your place the water is below the pump so the water is most likely running out of the pipe and back into the well before you start the pump.

  9. Hi, you both have been so busy, nice to see you both at Nic and Andrea's. Glad you have a new pump, will help a lot in the heat. I've been rain dancing in N Yorks , you should get some rain soon.
    Stay safe.

  10. You may have covered this in a previous video (I’m working my way through) but how many square metres is your original stone building and kitchen extension? I’ve been looking at places 20m2 and I’m trying to visualise it in context with some places I have seen that are currently being used. Big smiles when the pump worked finally. What lovely friends and gifts also, so kind.

  11. So glad you got the pump to work. Those fires are so worrisome. I feel for those affected by them.
Diego and Frankie are best buds now. Will you change your channel name to Frankie and Diogo off grid? Glad you have an Uncle to visit and help. Those grapes and blackberries look yummy. Best wishes and take care. I laughed when Grankie and Diogo went into the cabin when you asked if they wanted to go for a walk!

  12. Watching others in Portugal…. they tend to not realize that the parts in the well need STRAINERS to prevent clogging. I use lake water to water my lawns here in Michigan USA. My strainer is (1st) a commercial intake, but then (2nd) I wrapped that with ordinary household screen …. at least 5 times …. preferably with any spacing material, as 1 inch balls of screen —- all that screen will keep algae out and still let water into the intake unit.
