Lisbon Portugal Alfama Walking Tour

Alfama neighborhood

Alfama’s steep alleyways are dotted with stores offering traditional crafts and cafes, making it one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods. The ancient no. 28 tram, which travels through Alfama on its way up to the 11th-century So Jorge Castle, is packed with passengers. The views from the Miradouro da Graça balcony span the city to the Tagus River. In the evenings, some of the area’s long-running restaurants play mournful Fado music.

Alfama is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Europe. It was first established in the Iron Age, then occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, and other Germanic tribes until becoming the center of Moorish Lisbon. The Moors were either murdered in the siege or segregated in Mouraria after the city was conquered by Portugal’s first king in 1147, and Alfama became the abode of the superior classes. It was also the Jewish quarter until 1497, when the Jews (along with all other non-Christians who refused to convert) were banished. As Lisbon grew in affluence, the elite moved west, leaving Alfama to the fishermen.
