We are touring 3 apartments all mid-level price ranges for long term rentals. A one bedroom or T1 with one bath, a 2 bedroom or T2 with 2 baths and a 3 bedroom with one bath. All are located in the Funchal area and within walking distance to shopping, entertainment and cultural programs.
Many people tell us they have trouble finding a long term rental. Our best advice is that when you find one you need to be prepared to rent it immediately. So if you are not ready to put your money down then wait to go start looking. Rentals usually go very fast, within just a few days.
In case you do not know, the Madeira Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean about 325 miles west of Morocco and 625 SW of Lisbon.

Hi, Alan and Lesley. My husband and I recently discovered your channel and we are really enjoying your videos, and many of them have very useful tips for us, since we have a very similar situation. We are planning to sell our house in Florida and move either to Portugal or to Greece. Watching your videos, we discovered another very exciting destination to consider – Madeira! I have a question about your son – how old is he and does he plan to move back to states or stay in Madeira with you? Is he in college or working? journey. I was amazed that you took the time to have your Volkswagen shipped to Madeira (good for you)
My wife is 8 years younger. I am 67 and she will be 60 this year. We live in Las Vegas and in the process of selling our home and planning to move to Hawaii/Madeira in the next 3-6 months. We are planning a site tour in mid to late September for two weeks.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and letting us into your lives. We just returned from a 10 day vacation vacation to Algarve and Lisbon. My wife & I fell in love with the people and the culture. We were impressed by how peaceful the country is and how well organized it is compared to some parts of the US. The transit system in Lisbon puts NYCs MTA to shame…all the stations were clean and people follow the rules.
Looking to retire in a couple of years, Mediera seems to be affordable alternative to overly priced Hawaii.

Another excellent video, Alan. There are lots of similar videos about renting on the mainland but this is the first time I've seen one that is specific to Madeira. Great information and advice. I totally agree that if you see one you like, rent it. Finding your first place is definitely more difficult but I think once you are there, you are in a better position to look around. Cheers

Great timing! I am about to start my search with a Funchal based realtor next month. I have budgeted a little higher just in case I have to offer a little more. I expect to be paying rent for at least 4 months before I get there. Such is the realities of the D7. This is a great video!
If you rent directly from an owner and they withhold (steal) your deposit, you have no comeback.
I always use an Estate Agent.
If you use the same one for a while, they can vouch for your behaviour as a tenant, which can help when looking for a new place.

When you get a realtor in Madeira and in general Portugal, you also get a friend (most cases) unlikely in America/Canada (you can also get a friend sometimes!).
Sometimes they go beyond their duties to help you… It is a Madeiran thing.
I think if you look a little further than touristic areas, you will find something affordable and long term…
