Flooding in parts of Spain and Portugal this week has left some areas completely underwater as incessant rains continue. AccuWeather meteorologists warn that the worst could be yet to come as more storms appear on the horizon.
Rain began on Monday and continued through Tuesday as the storm developed and slowly moved across the Iberian Peninsula, where Spain and Portugal are located.
As of Thursday morning, the city of Castellón has already received 4. 72 inches (120 mm) of rain, while other parts of the province have received 2-4 inches (50-100 mm). In the province of Valencia, many communities received about 6 inches (150 mm) of rain in just 24 hours.
According to the Spanish meteorological agency, Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMet), after rain earlier this week, March 2022 was the wettest March on record in the Valencian Community. AEMet records for the area date back to 1950.
The rivers quickly began to swell as the heavy rains hit eastern Spain. Dramatic videos began to pour out of the country earlier this week as local rescuers closely monitored rising river levels, flooded areas and storm damage.
