Battling The Weather Rendering the Old House Walls #95

Renovating an old house has many complications. Rain and rendering are not a good combination. At least the well and dam will be happy.

  1. Ah, the chicken coop. I have a feeling that soon we are going to be graced with such a video. Story: Walking the area around the Sydney Opera House a number of years ago, there was this Italian Cafe/Bistro with the customary slate sign outside and on it was written, listing what you could expect to order and the cost, among which was "a Cuppa-chino". Not sure if it was an Italian mistake or Aussie humour but it amused me profoundly. Hearing you mention your long awaited "Cuppa" made me think of it. Hope you ended up with yours, later on.

  2. Hello Andrew, shame the digger man has to be put off as I always enjoy seeing him help with your transformation! I love any videos to do with your well so that will be coming up to enjoy. Every time I hear ‘higher than the sky’ playing in your videos I always think of your earlier video with it playing and you travelling along then lane from your place on buck is it, your red tractor. Cracks me up each time. Thank you again for your video 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  3. Another entertaining video.
I am glad to see the update on the well. I am looking forward to the Well rebuild videos.
How did your new roof fare with the rain last Thursday? It was torrential all day.
    Keep the vids coming. 👍

  4. Andy, Loved how you edited this video with your eagerness to finish a hard rendering job. You had me guessing wrong cause I thought, Oh no! It will rain & by George it didn’t. I was cracking up laughing at myself. Good thing you didn’t listen to me! LOL. You made my day, like always. So happy that you like to edit cause you do a fabulous job while working so hard! Cheerios from Michigan! ❤

  5. When I was watching the glass being picked out of the ground, I couldn't help but think of this type of compost sifter ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4A4aTvl3yE ). If you're putting raised beds into the area you have the glass in the ground, you could put down some weed control fabric around them. Then you'd be able to sift the soil, put that straight into the raised bed, use the gravel you are left with in the tray as pathway and also pick out the glass. If you had grids with 1/2" and 1/4" holes you'd be able to control the size of the stones you get. The only problem would be that this is so labour intensive that you'd probably rather buy soil and gravel. Maybe raking the ground with a strong rake and after it rains you'll be able to see more of the glass is the way to go for the short term.

  6. Thanks for the update. It's always strangely meditative to watch you and your brothers progress on the stone ruin. I'm located near Seattle in Washington state USA. We've just received our first rain in over three months and it's been such a relief. I'm guessing you all feel the same relief to finally have rain come to the Algarve.

  7. Nothing like a cup of tea for motivation! Great work on the rendering Andy. The house will look so sharp when it is done. One question that might be worth contemplating is whether the pond level is determined by the water table. If it is then digging the pond out is a good plan. If it isn’t then digging it down below whatever impermeable layer (maybe a clay soil) is catching and holding the water might create a leaky pond where water disappears into the ground faster. Showering in the rain reminds me of swimming lessons at the local outdoor community pool when I was a kid. Haha it was less enjoyable at that stage of life. Once again a great video! Cheers until next week 😊.

  8. looks like the groundworks/landscaping has exposed and distributed the midden. probably decades and decades and decades of glass and rubbish. its how people used to live, a midden on each property. best to have left it undisturbed.

  9. Hello Andy 🙋‍♀️ It is that time of year when we get torrential , much needed rain 🌧🌧 Your Well and Pond will be filled up in no time. January and February are the coldest 🌬months. So your new burner will be in constant use. Lovely to see your dogs 🐶🐶🐶 and Eddie has certainly landed on his Paws!!🐶💕 Thanks for another interesting video 🤔📹

  10. Wow that weather is really temperamental at the moment. Here’s hoping that I get a few dry days during my trip to Loulé next week. The courtyard is going to be fantastic when finished. My favourite part so far.😊

  11. Hello Andy. I saw youre open well and I'm wondering why it doesn't have a lid. A few years ago a boy fell into a well, and died, because the well didn't had a lid. From that day the mayor ordered that every well must have a lid.It is now a law in Portugal.

  12. During the summertime those pieces of glass can cause a fire. I've seen that happening in France during the summertime. Dry gras and once over sudden a fire started because of a little piece of glass that worked as a magnifying glass together with the hot summersun.

  13. I really enjoy the love you have for your land and delight in seeing your ideas taking shape, it makes for great watching 😊 Also I’ve been picking tiny pieces of glass out of my veg plot for 4 years now 🙄
