In the municipality of Sintra Portugal, Azenhas do Mar is a beach town (residential area). It is part of the civil parish of Colares. Azenhas do Mar translates to “Watermills of the Sea,” and the name comes from a once-mighty stream that carried the watermills to the sea.

It’s only 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Lisbon, near Cabo da Roca, the Palácio da Pena (Pena Palace), and other sights.
The village has a Mediterranean feel to it, with white buildings sloping down to the ocean. Wealthy families from Lisbon and Sintra determined in the mid-twentieth century that the site was ideal for vacation homes, that can be seen outside the main cluster of residences, which have been formerly the dwellings of a fishing community.
Praia da Aguda, Praia do Magoito (usually used by local and surfers), and Praia das Maçs are three prominent beaches near the Azenhas do Mar.

A Prehistoric Monument, commonly known as the Tholos of Outeiro das Mós, is located near Praia das Maçs and consists of an artificial Neolithic cave and a Chalcolithic domed or beehive tomb.
