In this inaugural live conversation, David and Wendy talk about “beginnings.” What does it mean to begin something in a time of collapse? Why would one do that, if one believes that collapse is imminent? These two veteran interlocutors launch the Collapse Club series with these compellingly appropriate questions.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
After some technical fumbling around, the substance of this conversation was about Wendy’s garden at her home in Portugal. She moved into an old house that needed a lot of renovation and loving care. The grounds also needed much attention. Wendy showed us numerous photos of the work she’s done to transform the land into a permaculture garden that serves as a gathering place for her local community.
TODAY’S OFFERINGS
With each talk, the participants offer a favorite resource — a book, a website, an organization, a teacher, etc. We discuss them at the end of the conversation, and provide links here:
Wendy offers ‘YES! Magazine: A Better World Is Possible.’ This publication is “optimistic, independent, and non-partisan.” It “inspires people to build a more just, sustainable, and compassionate world.” See the website at
David offers the author, scientist, and philosopher Iain McGilchrist, author of ‘The Matter With Things’ and ‘The Master and His Emissary’. McGilchrist is erudite and penetrating in his account of how the structure of the human brain determines how we see the world. He’s also charming and funny, as you can witness in this discussion between McGilchrist and the comedian and author John Cleese:
