BEST EXPAT COUNTRIES? (One is a big NO WAY!)

Enter at for your chance to win a $130K Custom Tiny Home from Tru Form Tiny and support a great cause, the National Park Foundation.

Every year, InterNations.org conducts a survey to see what current expats think about their home away from home. The results are tabulated and ranked to determine the Best Countries for Expats, according to expats.

Most of the countries that made the top 10 expat country list for 2022 shouldn’t be surprising, especially the number 1 country for expats, but a few might be considered controversial.

No countries from Central or South America made the list this year, which is very surprising. Let us know in the comments if you think a country is missing or one doesn’t belong.

  1. Singapore in this list? That is, if you want to live in an anal retentive society. Comparing the U.S. with Canada is skewed. U.S. has a population of 350 million, Canada with the same of maybe larger territory has 35 – 40 million inhabitants.

  2. I made a mistake moving to turkey I bought an aprtment for 150k usd but the locals aren't happy with foreigners living in their country. You will not feel comfortable living here. I'm an American so I'm not used to being treated like a third class citizen 🙃

  3. For expat Canadians "leaving Canada" it's not because it's too cold in the winter, or that we hate Canada- It's just most Canadians that can financially support it want to travel for personal exploration. Like I love Canada and love winter but small town "Ruralsburg upon Nowheresville" Canada is like small town USA- Either people get complacent and their home is "the best place ever" and never leave… Or many Canadians get sick of the same one street town and yearn for something different.

  4. Number one in the list – Mexico?! It is a joke, isn't it?!
I was working in Monterey (our company had an office there, at which I was working in for some time). I had a car from the company and could drive anywhere I wanted. To live there, my word would be – no way! Unless you stay all the time at some well secured place/resort!

  5. I live in UAE. Your information is a bit outdated. For instance, the weekend is half-day Friday through Sunday. The work week begins Monday. The most useful foreign language to learn here is Tagalog as there is a very, very large population of Filipinos who one would interact with on a regular basis. Dubai has a wonderful metro and the Emirates will soon connect with a train. It's a great place for young families. Though I live here, I will not make this a permanent home.

  6. A recent visit ti Portugal: too dang many bloody rich Americans moving there bringing America with them and screwing up the great lifestyle. Americans go back home. Stay away. If you MUST try to relocate there leave America where you left it. Learn the language and BECOME Portuguese.

  7. Having lived in SE Asia over 24 years, the visa issues are now a serious hindrance to a longer than 1-3 month stay. Thailand is trying to accommodate visitors from selected countries by giving 45 day entry visa plus 1 additional, 30 day extension. Vietnam has literally closed it's tourism. Among the Asian countries, Philippines are the only country allowing long stay visa for foreigners. In the past millions of people were milling around these countries, in today's environment, not many tourists around. China, Taiwan, ROK, SG, either closed or demanded large amounts of $$$ in order to stay longer term.

  8. I saw a headline that if you subtract off the 5 worst crime-stat cities in the U.S., the rest of the U.S. would be significantly higher on the World Peace Index. Can you speak to this?

  9. Indonesia developed faster for the last 10 years interm of public transportation compare to all countries on the list & in the world, in 2019 Indonesia just finished the longest BRT system in the world that cost only ¢15/ride, in 2019 finished the 1st phase of MRT project, now started the 2nd phase, end of 2022 LRT project will be completed running for central Jakarta to Bogor city. End of 2022 the first Fast train in South East Asia will be completed running from Jakarta to Bandung city in west Java, normally it takes 3 hours now with the new Fast train it's only take 30 minutes. 2nd phase will be running from Jakarta to Surabaya city in East Java. In 2021 Trans Java island Toll road finished, Trans Sumatera island Toll Road 80% completion, 100's of new international airport/seaport spread along the archipelago. The fastest development a country can achieved in 10 years.

  10. Funny story.. English widely spoken in Singapore? I guess you got your facts wrong, i think it's Chinese that widely spoken, i stayed 2 weeks a couple of time in Singapore i would say 50% people i talked to don't/can't speak English.

  11. Thanks guys. I retired after a number of health issues, convinced my wife to sell our house in May (at a good time) and then we moved to DFW. I'm not particularly happy here and have tried to get my wife to look at expat life but she is from Russia and likes the U.S. and doesn't quite understand why I want to get off the treadmill.

  12. UAE???? Completely respect that they have their laws and beliefs. Thank you very much but no thank you. And I have lived on 3 continents (over 13 years in each), visited 4 so I am very highly travelled.

  13. I'm surprised/ glad no Central EU countries were included: Czechia, Hungary, Poland. Maybe due to difficult language ?
Excellent life quality, history, food, low crime, good health care.
    Best kept secret, imho.

  14. A bit surprised that Malaysia and the Philippines were not in the top 10. Taiwan and the UAE are not places I would think of as expat areas….more like places people work. Just my opinion. I completely agree with your take on the US versus Canada and Ecuador, I am glad you both are at peace there. Honduras on the other hand, your safety is an issue.

  15. Indonesia isn’t all that conservative. No comparison with UAE. Both are Muslim majority countries. They are worlds apart in their attitudes. Taiwan is a treat to visit. I imagine that living there is even better. Singapore is epic!

  16. Keep in mind that Taiwan and Vietnam don't have retirement visas and Indonesia's requires you to hire a full time Indonesian. Australia and Canada don't really want anyone over 50.

Internations is geared towards expats who are working.

  17. Tiny Home for $130k??? It's official, Tiny Homes are for hipsters. Mobile Homes in the Tiny size are available for $50-100k. Putting high cost materials into a Tiny Home defeats the entire reason for Tiny Homes…but so cute they're a must have for hipsters to post on the Facebook page…not to actually live in.

  18. my un-expert take, there are a lot of countries that would be fun to visit for long periods. but to retire (grow old in)?

many of the south asian countries are too hot and humid for me, tad too crowded.

European countries while they have lots of fun historic sites, some areas get quite cool-cold. but to me, being used to US standards, many of the houses/buildings are 200 year old, retro fitted for plumbing, electrical, and are priced a little over US prices. in order to get a more US Standard things like triple pane windows, good insulation in attic, heatpump, plug in every 12', pex pipes ya have to pay around 1 mill.

Mexico is to close to the US, too touristy, lots of “day trippers”.
