Hey guys! This is ExpatsEverywhere and Josh and Kalie are going to review 5 of the best neighborhoods in Lisbon to live in. This particular episode is about Principe Real, which is a super central neighborhood that has an upscale, livable feel. Big thanks to Portuguese with Leo, Honeymoon Always, Weave the Story, and a few others based in Lisbon for helping us put the top 5 together. I know lots of people love Lisbon. Especially those working in the tech sector. The problem with those in the tech sector is they are typically not in Lisbon long term. They essentially are Digital nomads and will move on to their new adventure (same with many other locations). I found Lisbon to be a great place to venture into for a week or two and then leave. I'm more impressed with places like Setubal, and Caprica. If I was choosing a 'big' city in Portugal I would choose Porto over Lisbon. Though I am seeking more culture than many. So interactions with locals is higher on my list. Also many might call me a digital nomad… though I am just an atypical vagabond in search for a home.
I can always count on you guys to give the most in depth details of an area. You capture things that are hard to pinpoint: The expectations; The vibe; The costs; The inconveniences; All of it! You guys are rich in details! Can't get enough. You guys rock!!!
I love Principe Real, but I would not live there either.
I agree with Kalie, Principe Real was one of the two neighborhoods we decided to stay in on our scouting trip. We quickly ruled it out.
Americans are killing Lisbon. Sorry, but that’s the true.
yeah right good for expats, if you are a native portuguese you need to move to the perifery and shitty neighbourhoods for you expats to live on the city center
Love that you're not on the dance page with your ratings, haha! I'm with Josh on this one. 😁
Kalie hit the nail with "stage of life": its a great place for a single couple for example, but not good for families. For those try "restelo". Or leave lisbon and come to "mafra" :p
I agree with Katie’s assessment for only a 2 rating. Difficult to maneuver a stroller, too many cars, overcrowded and now add the tourists. Tourists are increased this year vs previous 2 years due to the ease of restrictions.
Wonderful assessment…you hit everything I am interested in. Thank you
Why Lisbon all the time? You want to live in a hidden gem town near Lisbon where renting prices are half ( yes, half! ) ? Just take a look at Setúbal, Tróia and Arrábida. You're welcome!
Gotta say… this content is excellent. I am not looking at Lisbon, but I was talking to my dental hygienist the other day about my wanting to move to Portugal. She was shocked that I didn't want to move to Lisbon. She thought Porto was too industrial. I am sure Porto has some industrial areas, but most of the videos I have seen never seem to show much. My scouting trip this fall (fingers crossed) will be interesting, for sure
OMG, the expression on Josh's face when Kalie said a "2". Priceless.
Looking forward to more neighbourhoods in the series, thank you!
I agree with Kalie 🙂
You guys are so funny. A 2 and 4 are clearly very low scores. That's the "best" neighborhood? I'm confused here.As a retiree, I accept that you have different priorities than I, and I watch your videos anyway. 🙂 This further validates why I am happy where I am, São Domingo de Benfica. Probably a neighborhood you would even like better than the ones ou reviewed. Not to hilly, parks, family friendly. And the Zoo is close by. Very Portuguese, so I can't rely upon my English. Just some thoughts. The longer I am here the more I fall in love with it. But, though I'm from a fly-spek on a map of east texas, I did spend 36 years in Los Angeles. Lisbon is a medium to small city for me.
Really enjoyed this video. Great info with clips of the area.
Hi guys. We wizzed through Lisbon and Porto visited most important towns. Just arrived in Aveiro and we’re in love. Thank you for all the work you do. Really helped us decide what direction to take on our very soon to happen move from Miami.
I'm with Josh on this one. I think it's a great neighborhood, with the only, even if significant downside being the cost, especially for rentals. But it has so much to offer in terms of restaurants, cafés, parks, etc. I agree with Katie that the streets are narrow and it's hilly. So it could be hard for you guys, given that you daughter is still very young. One extremely positive thing that you don't mention in your review is that there's a great organic feira in the neighborhood every Saturday morning. For people who care about buying organic food, having a nice outdoor market to buy one's vegetables and fruit (even if only once a week) is a really great benefit if one were able to find an affordable place to live in the neighborhood. In terms of those two metro stations being somewhat inconvenient, it's true, though it's not too bad — they are both around a 15 minute walk from the botanical garden and that other really nice park that you show in your video.
Agree with Kalie, visited Lisbon this week and had a great time, but the hills and walking would be hard full time. In Averio tonight and will be in Porto tomorrow. Really like your videos.
Great video guys! I moved to the Lisbon area few months ago and happily living in Carcavelos. Nonetheless, if I were to live centrally I do think Avenidas Novas/Saldanha/Av. Liberdade seem like the best areas to live. Totally like Principe Real but would give it a 3 of 5 as I agree with you both that is pretty expensive and quite hilly for daily errands.
Looking forward to the next vid of your series! 🙂
I agree with Kalie.
Thanks guys, 👍🌍
We lean closer to Kalie’s assessment. (We live in Lapa, not far from the Basilica and Jardim da Estrela). Sure, plenty to do and see in Principe Real, but too much foot and motor traffic and too expensive. We do like the area just below it around Praça das Flores, but the other nearby area around Praça da Alegria needs serious building renovations (as you show). Hope you do another meet-up at Jardim da Estrela – we were there, but didn’t get a chance to say hi. Bob
Way too busy for me! And that’s without even mentioning the housing prices which are just absurd.
I'm thinking of emigrating from the US and it's between Portugal and Spain, i'm wondering what both countries are like in terms of democracy, do they have mass shootings and crime and how are immigrants treated compared to the USA.
Thanks for the wonderful well-rounded comments on this neighborhood. 👍🏻 Love the different opinions!!! While we see the same things—our opinions differ. 😁 We actually stayed a few blocks from this neighborhood back in late October 2021. 🏩 At the time didn’t realize we were in (one of) the “high rent district” of Lisbon. The hills and aircraft noise were killers for us. While certainly a busy area we didn’t feel this neighborhood was overrun by tourists so much. Cheers.
Just as a side note, Embaixada is also a XIX century mansion. All the decor inside is from that time.
I’d Ike to see a review of Parque des Nações neighborhood. I’d give Principe Real a 3. Nice to visit but too busy to live there.
The rating reactions were hilarious 😂 Thanks for another great video!
I just visited Braga ! I could see living in Braga over Porto just my personal option . I’ve been to Porto twice and I just don’t vibe with it 😬
How have Portugal's cost of living prices been effected by the world's craziness? Food, rent, utilities …etc. Is Portugal experiencing any shortages?
Sorry, too many iron bar "expensive decoration" on windows and entrances IMHO. No graffities at the moment according to Steetwiew. Loved your comment at the end that it´s not a neighborhood 4 you. Greetings 🙂
Viva Kalie!!! I give a 2 as well !!! I left California for the same reasons!!! ❤️Porto!!!
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
I like your faces when the other person is giving their ratings. 😂
