BIGGEST FARMERS MARKET IN OUR REGION – FUNDAO – LIVESTOCK, PLANTS & MUCH MORE!

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in early spring time as we are given a tour around the town where we live, Fundao, a place very dear to our hearts indeed, located in central Portugal.

We start the virtual tour of the farmers market by introducing ourselves, walking through the crowds of people and talking a little bit about the bank holiday (feriado) 25th of April, or liberty day.

We walk down some of the aisles in the market place, looking at all the different wares for sale, the foods, tools, crockery, livestock, vegetable plugs and trees. It is our weekly habit to come down to the market nice and early and take a walk around, followed by a coffee and some breakfast in a local cafe. Which is exactly what we did today.

Once we finished our coffee and breakfast we headed back to our own farm, where I explained a little about our tractor having gone wrong the week prior, it needed a new fuel tank. Luckily our community here is so warm and kind that a lovely friend of ours in the village who is a mechanic popped round our house, had a nice glass of wine with me and fixed the tractor there and then. Marvellous, as the grasses are really growing due to the spring sun and showers, when the tractor is absent we really notice how much we rely on the tractor and of course how much back breaking labour it takes from us.

So, I attached the grass cutting topper, a rotating chain that spins off the PTO shaft and chops up weeds and grasses, then made my way out onto the road and up to the orchards. Our orchards here are completely organic or bio and therefore the only method for weed control is to manually cut them. Other farms use nasty roundup glysophates for weed control but not on our farm. My father works alongside me doing a little strimming in the parts I cannot reach.

After the grasses have all been cut I spot Mariana and little Chloe out for an afternoon walk on the farm, given the beautiful sunshine and dappled shade of the newly leafed trees, this makes for a perfect sheltered introduction to farm life for little Chloe, who is now just a little over five months old.

We took a stroll up past the main orchard to the wooden sheep barn, where our pigeon loft is, the pigeons are temporarily housed inside here until their babies are old enough to support themselves then they will be let out into the wilds, where they should (we hope) return every evening to sleep in the nest boxes. Pigeons make a fantastic meat source for people like myself who are self sufficient in poultry, this gives a little variation on the farm with more types of meat being consumed, also with the twelve potential offspring per year per breeding female this gives a great quantity of meat.

The two little eggs have not yet hatched but one had began pipping, a term used by poultry breeders to signify the babies beak tapping the egg from the inside until it breaks through and begins hatching. We shall have to wait and see next week if the babies hatch out and survive their most crucial first few days of life!

Shortly after, inevitably, the flock of sheep all come tumbling down the hill to greet us, we were trying to get up there without alerting them and making them run all the way down for nothing! We let Chloe touch Sweeties wool and ear with a little stroke, discuss the reason for keeping animals and growing our own food and how this benefits the family greatly, organic produce raised and reared with our own two hands, filling the plates and bellies of our loved ones.

We sit down by the spring with Tiger and Ty the cats, discuss our week on the farm and thank you all for watching along with us. We hope you have an amazing week ahead and we look forward to seeing you all again in the next one. Bye bye for now!

See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep – Shortly pigs too!
