Portugal – Family Reunion Visa
The holder of a Portugal residence permit has the right to have its family members join him in Portugal. At any time after having been granted a Portuguese residence permit, the main applicant may apply for residence permits for its family members.
This Visa is quite flexible and covers the following family members:
●Spouse or Partner;
●Children (including adopted and children of the spouse);
●Dependents (i.e. parents or siblings that are dependent).
The visa application is made through the competent Portuguese authority who will analyze if these members will be or not a burden to the Portuguese state. This means that the applicant must show that he possesses sufficient income to support any of those family members.
The visa granted will be for the same period of residency as the holder of the Portuguese Visa and will have, among other rights, access to public healthcare and the right to work and study in Portugal. They will also have the right to travel within the Schengen Area, as long as the travel holder of the Portuguese Visa travels with them at the same time.
This visa gives also a pathway to Portuguese Citizenship after 5 years of residing in Portugal. The family member will be eligible for permanent residency and to apply for Portuguese citizenship (i.e. Portuguese passport).
