We have all heard of the brave people who scream ‘jump right in the waters warm!’. Well Amanda and Jeff are these kind of people. They had the courage to buy a house in a foreign country sight unseen. It all worked out perfectly. They are now living a dream retirement at 49 on the island of Madeira in Portugal. Let’s go. It’ll Be fun!
We spend the day with them in Campanario. We have been here before a couple months ago. The area is located between Ribera Brava and Camara de Lobos. It’s population is about 4500 people, and has a rural feel to it. Only about 20 minutes from Funchal. The location is perfect.

Happy for them, but don’t try this at home. Great way to either go broke quickly or live miserably for years. There is no need to rush into any European property deal. Real estate transactions in Europe are the exact opposite of say California. Competition is either solved through nepotism or rebids from other buyers or transact according to the deal made. Regardless, acting quickly has no benefit, because the deal will work to your favor over time or it won’t. It’s incredible how much risk US buyers assume when risk isn’t required. Happy they are happy, but again, not at all necessary or recommended.

Been to that miradouro on the 7.45 minute marker. I remember I had to do a #1 and there was no public restroom around, so had to go down that dirt path to do my thing. 😂

It shows that it is important to do your homework. Like shipping, what to take with you and what not, what you can buy on Madeira and bringing a car over, and electric appliances that will not work (due to differences volts, US 110, Europe 220 volts).

Thank you Allen and Leslie for another great video, my Wife and I are looking forward to retiring to Portugal in about 5 years, we plan on retiring when our youngest daughter graduates from High School, I will be 67 then and we are hoping our Girls will come with us. Your video's provide a great resource for us to gauge our decision making in everything we need to do to prepare us for the next chapter in our lives. My Wife and I are still trying to decide just where in Portugal to retire to, we are planning a scouting vacation in a couple of years to help make the decision on our new permanent home, we are looking at Madiera, the Azores and somewhere in or near Caldes da Rainha, close to the beach but away from the tourist areas. Thank you for putting out very informational videos about your journey and others that have also made the leap. Michael

Alan your videos make me dream about moving to Portugal, I’m not afraid of change since I came to the USA thirty years ago , I’m from South America , I believe change is good. My husband is one year away from retiring but not as adventurous as me 😅. We’ve got been thinking about visiting Portugal probably next year for maybe two weeks. Loved the down to Earth approach of your friends, more even the expression, "leave the past in the past" its a new beginning, mite be a simpler way of life, but there's nothing wrong with it, less means more, real nice people, real nice food and PONCHA🤣🤣 beverages, weather, living life to the full, get reed of the rat race, the "keeping up with the Jones's" etc. it gives you a new lease of life, even your health might improve, and often does, family and friends meet more often, what else does a man/woman want?.
