Hi Olly! First of all, wow! What a superbly researched and produced video. I'm amazed. I'm a Brazilian language teacher (I teach English and French as foreign languages) and I have never seen a foreigner present the history of our language and culture so well. Truly amazing work!!! 👏👏👏

That is precisely why I'm going to be so specific and "nitpicky". "Nordestino" is only a dialect in telenovelas, and it's an absolute travesty. Those are carioca actors putting on a fake accent that doesn't exist in the real world. No real person speaks like that. I'm sorry, but no two people from different north eastern states speak exactly alike.

Your list was quite detailed. You have "baianês" and the very specific "recifense" (that is the dialect for only one city!) on your list, lots of variety for south and south east, but the rest of north eastern Brazilian dialect is listed simply as "nordestino". I have to say that to us, who actually live in the region, there is no notion of a "nordestino" dialect. You could include a few other varieties, like "paraibano", "cearense", "potiguar" and "maranhês", or just leave it out entirely.

If a Brazilian person actually told you that there is such a thing as a "nordestino" dialect, I'm sure it was someone from either Rio or São Paulo. They tend to be quite prejudiced against us, northeasterners. No matter where you come from, they'll just call you "Bahia" or "Paraíba". There is no nuance 🤷‍♀️

I once lived in Brazil as a child, and I distinctly remember picking up Portuguese very quickly because the Kindergarten I went to only used Portuguese and nobody spoke English. i unfortunately lost Portuguese after I went back to Australia because at that age I didn't understand the value of knowing many languages and i refused to speak it anymore. I can no longer understand Brazilian Portuguese.

I tried learning Brazilian Portuguese but it's too difficult without having any Portuguese speakers to practice with. I live in California and I have never met a Brazilian here. Nobody speaks Portuguese in California. It's just not worth the effort. I guess I'm stuck with Spanish…

WOW, Olly! Just wow! What a well-written, well-produced, and informative video about Brazilian Portuguese. I'm sure this fantastic content will attract even more attention to our language, but (most importantly) I'm so glad the indigenous languages and all the turbulent origins are part of the script because that says so much about our culture as a whole.

The present-day version of "língua geral" is spoken in the Brazilian municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Amazon) where it is nowadays an official language alongside Portuguese.

In the south they sounded like they were speaking Portuguese with spanish accents. They said gracias instead of obrigado

It's ironic that Cuba was named Cuba by Columbus who grew up in a small town in Portugal, called… you guessed it CUBA!
In fact many of the places in that region were named by Columbus and they are all places in Portugal.
He wasn't Spanish or Italian, he was Portuguese.
I wonder what he sounded like?

15:26 I loved the video. But this part is totally wrong. It is something made up for children. The collors are based in the colors of the house of Bragança. The imperial one. The stars are the capital of each state. The "Ordem e progresso" is some foolish phrase made by the republicans.

Your video is pretty accurate historically speaking besides one little detail. The flag. Here’s what the colors actually mean: green, a casa de Bragança. Yellow, dinastia Habsburgo-Lorena also called Casa Habsburgo or Casa da Austria. Blue, the Esfera Armilar also present in the Portuguese coat of arms. And the stars represent the Brazilian states. The version you shared in your video is a recent idea that started being told to kids in school and it became kinda like the common sense but officially that’s what the flag actually meant since the beginning. Great video either way and your Portuguese is great

There is a museum in Paarl, South Africa, dedicated entirely to the Afrikaans language, so the one in Brazil is not the only museum in the world in that category.

Great video. But I kinda disagree with calling different Brazilian-Portugueses "dialects", in Brazil we called that only "regionalism", because even if we have different words, different ways os speaking, different accents and slangs… We can still pretty much understand each other from south to north. In the example of Bahia she said "maínha" instead of "mãezinha", it's easy to understand what it means. In Italy, for example, they have more than 200 dialects that are very different from standard Italian and different from each other, they are mostly not mutually intelligible… That's a dialect.
But still there are some dialects in Brazil but they are very rare and pretty unknown even for most Brazilians.

My FAVORITE language in the entire world!! What most people say about how French sounds, & how some people are obsessed with Japanese is, is how I feel about Brazilian Portuguese.
