On the weekends in the summer, this beach is crowded with neighborhood families. It is called after the greatest of the several defenses on this shore, the So Julio da Barra Fort, a “tower” constructed in the 16th century. The stronghold operated as a political and military jail in addition to its initial role as a port guardian for Lisbon. Since it is the official house of Portugal’s Minister of Defense, the vaulted interior of the building, which features a cistern, is off-limits to the general public.
The 16th-century Torre do Bugio fortress-lighthouse, which was built to safeguard Lisbon in addition to serving as a guide for sailors, is also visible in the distance on a small circular island.

The Carcavelos beach, the largest and one of the busiest on the Cascais coastline, is just next to this one. The So Julio da Barra fort stands between the two beaches, and you can reach Carcavelos by walking west along the road after New Lisbon University’s up-to-date campus in less than ten minutes.
You ultimately get at the Oeiras marina and the Santo Amaro de Oeiras beach, which is also a well-liked summer vacation spot for locals, by strolling east along the coastal promenade towards Lisbon.

Although the waves at Praia da Torre aren’t as ideal for surfing as those at Carcavelos since the beach is more protected, you’ll still see a lot of surfers there. However, it is a better choice for those with children due to the calmer waves. There is a lifeguard on duty throughout the summer.
