Good Morning Friends!
Hope you all are doing well. I can’t believe it, but we have survived our first year here in Portugal! Life has been absolutely amazing and I can’t believe that we are living our dreams of living abroad.
Also, this week marks another big moment for my family. Our kids finished their first year of Portuguese school! Learning how to speak Portuguese has been a breeze for them. I wish I was a kid so I can soak up a new language like a sponge.
It’s been a while since I shared my cost of living here in Portugal and I figured now with homeownership comes new expenses. In this video, I’ll be going over all of my current monthly expenses.
Before you get totally shocked, I must confess that we moved to Portugal not to be frugal. Yes, we know that Portugal is an affordable country and we could save a ton by reducing down our expenses, however, we wanted to live a comfortable life. What does that mean? Could we have purchased a less expensive home? Sure, but then that would mean our children would have had to share rooms and we wouldn’t have a spare room for guests. Or, we would likely have had to buy a home where we would have had to invest a lot of money to update and or make it comfortable for us.
Could I save nearly 1200 euros by sending my children to public school? Most certainly! But then I wouldn’t have made the instant connections with their teachers and be able to message then when I’m on homework duty. I’m also a little partial to the convenience of the school handling all after school activities and sports. I quite enjoy having a break from being the chauffeur.
Could we save 300 euros and not eat out. You betcha, but that would mean I would need to meal plan and prepare every single meal. Hmmm….you already know my answer to that.
Could I cancel my monthly subscriptions? Sure, but then how can I keep up with my favorite shows like The Stranger Things or Bridgerton (no judgement 😂).
Could I clean my own house or figure out how to manage my pool? Of course, but didn’t I already mention that I’m lazy in the video? If you didn’t catch that part, I’ll tell you now….I’m lazy 😹.
Anyway, my point is, can I reduce down my expenses? Sure and I plan on looking into reducing some aspects down, but I don’t plan on reducing it down to the point where it becomes an inconvenience to my family. The good thing is, you can look at my expenses as a template for your family. Maybe you won’t need all the extras that I listed and create a budget using my numbers as an example.
Note that some things are meant to be in USD and not in Euros since I charge most things onto my credit card which then exchanges the currency.
Anywho, I hope you all enjoy this video!
Hope you all enjoy the video!

Awesome video Josie, always so informative, thank you.
Thank you for all the information! As a Canadian family of 4, we are wondering which city of Portugal are you in? This looks like a really nice area 🙂 Hopefully the golden visa still allows foreigners to buy residential properties that they can live in not just hotels …
Nice video. I was shocked by how much you spend each month! 4500-5000€ seems pretty high. Have you adjusted to Portugal way of spending and living?
Thanks for your very helpful videos. Your house is gorgeous!! You mentioned your cost for traveling mailbox. I am doing research on which mail service to use. Do you recommend traveling mailbox based on your experience? I heard mixed reviews. Thanks!
Is that on a 30-year mortgage?
Any chance you could touch on the cost of house insurance, car insurance, property taxes, and home alarm system if applicable in a future video? That would be greatly appreciated. It would be fantastic if you could do a video on the cost of buying a house similar to yours. Not interested in a fixer-upper. Something with an a or a+ rating with a small pool, four or five bedrooms. It's really hard to find content on idealista and although I plan to go there at the end of the year to shop for houses, I would love to know what ballpark I'm looking at. Also your area is ideal because of the moderate climate. Not interested in Lisbon, the rainy area up north. Silver.coast seems to be the best pick. If you had time to do a video like that it would be fantastic.
How do they do trash pickup in Caldas? Is this worked into the property taxes? Planning on moving to Silver Coast (hopefully Caldas if we find a nice house there)
Thank you for video and giving us a peek into your monthly expenses. It’s very helpful when trying to plan my future budget. And I’m totally the type of person that would order delivery a lot! :-). Btw, your house looks gorgeous. ❤️
Great video Josie!
Im planning on moving to Portugal on a D7 visa. I was wondering, where in Portugal do you currently live? and what is the name of the school your kids go to? Is the language of instruction in portuguese?
The cost of school is really amazing compared to private school in the US! Great video, thanks!
Thanks for making! Great information!
Thanks for another excellent video Josie! I can’t believe how affordable the dental cleaning is there 😮 It is over $300 where I live in Canada 😣 I always love watching your videos as it gives me hope for a great life in Portugal when my family and I move there in 3 years after my daughter graduates university! Hope you have a great day!
We just arrived in Sao Martinho today and earlier had an amazing lunch in Caldas in that stunning park! I thought about your family wish you all well!
Thanks for your YouTube content! It’s very helpful 😄
Nice to see you again, Josie! Keep the videos coming!
