I think no matter what nuclear weapon with whatever yield russia would use, Nato and the rest of the world could not ignore that.
That would be a red line after Japan, we can never cross again. Using that option is an unforgivable sin and would definitely spark world war 3, because it shows that russia has no boundaries it would not cross.
Especially in an completely unjustified act of agression.
As a self defense measure, yes, that would possibly justifiable. But as an act of agression in a conflict where nearly ever other country already tells them to stop? We could not justify not to act.

Thats the frightening thing about nuclear weapons, it completely offsets the power. If all of the countries would be in an agreement and living in peace together and suddenly one country goes nuts and attacks another, nobody can do anything about it, without likely spiraling the event into desaster.

Why would sending NATO ground troops and aircraft into Ukraine result in WWIII? People keep saying it like some kind of mantra and as if it's self-evident, but I don't get it at all. Repeating it over and over doesn't make it true.

Russia is bogged down in Ukraine at present and not making much progress. And it's even lost ground in a couple of areas. Russia's currently in no position to fight OTHER countries. If NATO went in now it could steamroll the Russian forces in Ukraine and drive them out. Including from the Donbas region and from Crimea.

So why aren't we doing that?

As for tactical nukes, NATO should make it clear to Russia that if it uses them (or uses biological or chemical weapons) against Ukraine or any other country, then NATO would wipe out the Black Sea fleet using conventional anti-ship missiles and/or bombs and attack the Kremlin using conventional non-nuclear bombs and/or sub-launched TLAMs. A B-2 can carry 80 500lb bombs. 4 B-2s can carry 320 of them.

As for strategic ICBMs, if Russia nukes the west it'll be nuked back and cease to exist. No-one wins.
