“White Flag” is a song by English singer-songwriter Dido, released as the lead single from her second studio album, Life for Rent. The song was first released to US radio on 7 July 2003 and was issued in the United Kingdom as a physical single on 1 September 2003. The song performed well on record charts around the world, peaking at number one in Australia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Portugal. In Dido’s native UK, it reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, and in the United States, it climbed to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, features actor David Boreanaz as Dido’s love interest.

“White Flag” was nominated for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards but lost to Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”. It won the Best British Single at the 2004 Brit Awards. The song has featured in several TV series including Smallville, The Inbetweeners, Medium, The Sopranos, Tru Calling, Cold Case, Winners & Losers, as well as in the films Perfect Stranger, Mommy and Bad Education. Carly Rae Jepsen performed a cover version of the song on Canadian Idol. “White Flag” ranked at number 317 on Blender’s list “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born”

  1. I've been a fan of Dido (pronounced "Dye-doh") since her debut (back in 1999). This is one of her most well-known songs but it's not my fave. Her song "Thank You" was sampled for Eminem's "Stan" and she's also featured in the music video as well. Please react to Dido – "Here with Me."

  2. Dido was a proper phenomenon back in the day. The melody’s were great but the lyrics really talk about how relationships and feelings often truly are. And her voice is quite haunting and made for depth of feeling. She had quite a few hits. The video was also great. When you put Angel from Buddy the vampire slayer in it how could it not be :D. You are in for a treat me thinks 🙂

  3. Love the sentiment of this song. Dido rode the wave and was prob the most successful of the acoustic/electronic fusion trend of the time with female artists. Think she inspired record companies to all find their Dido

  4. Jewel who? She wishes… LOL 😂 Dido is an international artist, America knew about her thanks to Eminem, but she's international, that jewel though… "I don't know her"

  5. **DIDO TRIVIA TIME!!** ….I give up, I'm throwin' in my FLAG……This tune hurts me personally, but, for a DIFFERENT reason….I'll explain later…..

    – ….this tune was the 1st single from Dido's 2nd Album, 2003's "Life For Rent"; her debut Album ("No Angel") took a VERY long time to take off, but a certain rapper helped her shoot into the STRATOSPHERE….Eminem sampled her tune "Thank You" for his MASSIVE hit "Stan", and Dido became WORLD known….

    – She is the Sister to Rollo, the main member of the Trip-Hop Group, Faithless, who had many Dance hits, thru the 1990's; Rollo produced and assisted on Dido's 1st Album but Dido had more 'say', on "Life"….

    – …and, it was a smash…. a MASSIVE, MASSIVE SMASH! …12 Million sold, it's one of the Top selling CD's in the UK….EVER, and "White Flag" got Dido her ONLY Grammy, in Best Female Pop Vocal….

    – …NOW! …why it hurts ME; Back in 1999, I was asked to promote Dido's 1st release (in the USA), "Here With Me"; the tune was tanking FAST, and they wanted to send Dido to the Clubs, since the tune stiffed on Pop Radio…..THEN, her label 'rush released' "Take My Hand" to the Clubs, and, left ME to 're-promote' "Here w/ Me"…..

….I KNEW the tune bombed, so….I GAVE UP the gig, telling them, "…I just don't think she'll make it, on Pop Radio…." …jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus….. "Roswell" (the TV Series) asks for the tune ONE WEEK after I gave up the promo gig, the tune BLOWS the hell up, then, Eminem came after!! ….then, when I got in contact with Hosh Gureli (of Dido's label), I asked to promote "White Flag"….

….I was told, "..aren't you the One who said Dido wouldn't 'make it on Pop Radio'!? …maybe YOU should throw in YOUR White Flag…" ….OUCH….OUCHOUCHOUCH! ….ha-HAA!! …I didn't get the gig. ..Oh, dear……

  6. She was a british person and a huge success with her two first albums (''No Angel'' and ''Life for Rent''). I remember when it's came out when i was young, i love this since it's came out. In last years, i buying her greatest hits, since i love ''Thank You'' and many songs of her like ''White Flag'' and ''Don't Leave Home''. ''White Flag'' was her most successful single to date worldwide. Depist ''Thank You'' was her highest charting single in US (n.3 in US), ''White Flag'' was the first single of the album ''Life for Rent'' and was her biggest hit single to date worldwide and contribues ''Life for Rent'' album to sold over 12 millions copies worldwide. Depist she not peaked the top 10 in US (peaked in n.18 in 2004) like ''Thank You'', ''White Flag'' made a huge longevity in the US charts (spent 41 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100) and received a lot of airplay in radios pop and MTV who contributes the huge success of the song and the album. ''White Flag'' was her last song to charting in US to date. She have only two singles charting in US (''Thank You'' in n.3 and ''White Flag'' in n.18), but theses two songs contributes her respectives albums to have two huge best selling of her career.
