DIGGING FOR POO! | SEPTIC TANK EP. 3 | Portuguese DIY Home Renovation

We are in the middle of renovating our house in an abandoned Portuguese village. Today, after some digging, we found what we’re looking for. And it’s no treasure chest 😉 So one of the coming videos could get very messy – stay tuned! And to be sure not to miss it why not hitting the bell thingy 😉 thx for watching!

My name is Jasper and i bought a house in a Portuguese ghost town. Together with my dogs Zoey & Akira we show you the rebuild of our house and what it is like living the daily life in Central Portugal.

  1. There are several options. To start, maybe add underground leech pipes to the septic box to help spread the drainage into the earth, and help it drain out faster. Not near your well/poço! You can add a pipe with a valve that will re-direct your gray water into the garden area instead the septic. Add a second plastic septic and join with the original.

  2. Jasper, maybe the septic tank needs to be emptied, it hasn't been used for a long time and is clogged, maybe a farmer can come and empty your tank, and yes, septic tanks don't like chemicals, you have to emptied and bring back bacteria…

  3. the whole project is a failure…everything is shit in the truest sense of the word. In a hundred years you won't be able to finish this at this rate and without professional help!!
currently everything is just botch…typically Dutch, so to speak,

  4. Inside the tank there should be 2 chambers .One chamber with the poo pipe running in to it .The other with the grey water going into it .It should drain naturally if working properly .So perhaps you need to put a couple of lids in it .One lid to each chamber and a stink pipe up into the air from it to vent gases to atmosphere . With lids you can have it pumped out and start again .Grey water can be channeled into gravel filled overflow soak away channels to water plants etc .Poo contents should break down naturally in the separate poo chamber .Do not use bleaches etc down the toilets ! Soap in the grey water tank not so damaging but natural products better .I think your main problem might be an old small cesspit that was never designed for lots of water being used .Old cesspits can get lined with a layer of poo that stops natural drainage .I had this problem .So I got a digger in for half a day and dug a much bigger cesspit next to the old one and rebuilt the system into this new pit . .Lots of U tube videos on how to do this with a two pipe system and natural soak away .If you are putting in more bathrooms toilets etc you will have to do this anyhow so might as well do it now . .The old cesspit soak away system is far more ecologically friendly system than the modern Fibre glass tanks now used .They have to be pumped regularly .The old ways are the best !

  5. Jasper. if you have two pipes going into the septic tank that's a good thing in my view. In your situation, I would start to separate blackwater (poo) from grey water (showers and dishes). Start to use organic washing liquids which opens the door to save the grey water and use that as water for plants. That will reduce the volume of black water your current septic system has to coupe with. When you add shower rooms and other drainage pressures I'd further expand your grey water catchment. To catch the Grey water you could dig a medium size tank into the ground to create a low spot (the Grey water sump), and have a sump pump move that as it gets full to a above ground tank to draw from. Your grey water sump tank will need a clean-out filter that is easy to get to and maintain, so you can capture fats and hair and stop your pump getting constantly blocked. Lastly you should be thinking about catching rainwater for the same reasons. Water in a hot place like Portugal is a valuable resource, so don't waste it. Take Care D

  6. If you want my advice, put three or four spoons of bicarbonate sodium, with vinager , the usual of cider, or of grapes, not the cleaning one. And afterwards a liter of boiling water, in the shower, and sink, toilet . You will see that the pipes from the sink and shower, will flush nicely. I use it at home. It can happen that the septic tank is full, and you have to call for the cleanning, every town or city has, they have a truck and a vacuum cleaner to take off the poo. Coffee grounds and tea are good to clean the pipes. I'm sure you don't want to look at it's inside!! There can be dead rats or garbage in the pipes. There is a technique you do, with a long hard construction iron, you pull it into the pipes, and take it as long as you can, with a small hook on the point. Then you pull off, to help to take off what is inside. As the house was not in use for a long time, there can be dead small animals inside. Wish you good luck.

  7. Does Portugal have companies that do septic pumping? The bacteria will be most effective from an empty tank situation. Animal fats and oils are big enemies of septic systems. The main waste run may need to be cleaned. a drill powered drain snake might do it but you may need to remove your toilet to get clean access to the piping. I'm not envious of this job. Good luck and be gentle with the old plumbing.

  8. The tank is full. The only way to resolve your situation is to have it emptied by a septic company. Septic tanks get emptied every 2 to 5 years depending on the size of the tank and the number of people who are using it.

  9. Please be careful and heed the warnings of other supporters. Bring in a professional. I know you like to do things for yourself but this is a health iSsue for all the humans and dogs on youR property.

  10. Hi Jasper just read Aunty's Tutu.
I would go with her remedies.
Why not put up a vote which way to go.
From what you said in this vid you have gathered what has happened.
Aunty Tutu is the way to go.
Divert washing up water and Shower water to use in Garden.
Send the poo to the septic tank.
    Also consider a waterless closet.
A Thunderbox as they say in Australia else where.
You can get a toilet set up which captures the urine and allows the poo to dry degrade and you can use that in the garden.
What a subject but anyway I await to see what you decide to do.
I vote for Aunty Tutu plus a green toilet add on.

  11. Get the professionals in now before you go any further, you don’t know what sort of things might happen and from a health point you will need things professionally signed off especially if you will be letting out one or two of the houses and to find out if it will take any expansion on the property. 😊👍🦑🦤🦫🦖🗿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😻
