  1. Did you check out mainland Portugal before choosing Madeira?
I am hoping for rental three months each in Portugal and the Far East between October and April to get away for the winter and keep a small base in the home country.

  2. Gorgeous house, a very good find congratulations. Hope you will be very happy there. Hope we find something as good as this when we retire to madeira in a about 5y 🙂 love the view of the bay.

  3. Loved the video. Quick question. I see your home has a smart lock or keyless lock. Is your door like the ones in North America or a door with those 3 or 4 bolt steel doors. I don’t know the actual name of them but I am trying to find a proper smart lock or like yours in the video, here in mainland portugal. Curious if there is a name model number on it. Your cost by the way are right on. It maybe cheaper than North America but can be realistic to live in Portugal relatively comfortable . Cheers

  4. Hi guys, it was nice to discover your channel and view some of your videos. Very appreciative of the information on your apartment. My wife and I retired 18 months ago and moved from the US to Setúbal Portugal. After a visit or two to Madeira we are thinking of trying island life out for a few years. From our experience in Setúbal, and like you have said in a couple of your videos (5 shockers at least), it is challenging to find rentals here in Portugal. Did you like the rental agency that you worked with in finding your apartment? If you don´t mind sharing their name. We will have another trip to Funchal this fall and will try to hit a bunch of agencies to pin down a rental for this winter. Thanks a bunch.

  5. Thanks for the good information. If I may ask, what accommodations did you present for your D7? Also, have you gone through your SEF appointment yet?

  6. NIce place. Do you have mold issues? Everywhere I read, apartments in Portugal have mold. Even new ones. This is one of my biggest concerns about moving to this country. In one hotel I stayed in lisbon, a 4 star-one at that, had mold! I have to shift to a different. In the portugal facebook group, I hear nightmare stories abut people getting sick from mold in their apartments. Do you have something akin to central air. which is hard to find in portugal?

  7. Thanks for this tour, guys, the apartment looks amazing! Also very impressed with how quickly you've gotten your cost of living to under €3K per month.
I realize that you're just getting started with your channel, but at some point maybe you could make a video about the reasons you chose Madeira over Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and other popular destinations among expats.
It would also be very interesting to learn more about your financial independence journey, how many years of conscious pursuit it took to get there, how you knew that you had enough, what motivated you to move abroad, whether there are things you miss about your North American life, etc. Those are always very interesting and unique perspectives, which I hope you can share.
Thanks so much, all the best to you in the Second Half of Life! We can't wait to start ours.

  8. Your apartment is Amazingly beautiful. Much better than the most luxurious condos / apartments in US. I see that in general the Europeans know how to build homes to be appealing and functional. How much typically these types of T2s will cost to buy. Also can you please add some links to the real estate agents / the listing sites for rentals so at least can get an idea on the rents. I realize the agents wont talk to me remotely but atleast can get an idea on what is out there.

  9. Beautiful apartment!
I have done the same thing, selling all I have, retiring, and moving to the Canary Islands from the US.
My only regret is I did it at the age of 62, and not sooner, like you. The best decision I ever made. My biggest worry is that I may have to return to the US some day.

  10. Very nice apartment. Good luck with your second part of your life. I have been many times in Funchal and I can say that, if it was not part of a relatively small island, I would also like to live there. In my opinion, Funchal is one of the most attractive Portuguese cities.

  11. Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share your apartment and for your responses to the D7 questions posted in the comments below. Were you able to attend your SEF appointments at one of their offices on Madeira or did you have to travel to one of their offices on the mainland? Did you need have anyone attend the appointment with you?

  12. It looks like you two are living the dream that my wife and I share, only we are about 3 years behind you. 🙂 We're planning to retire in 2025 and expat to Portugal, either the Algarve region or Madeira. We will be watching your channel with great interest!
