PADA Studios Artists-in-residence Elise Carlton.
Elise Carlton (b. 1994) is a visual artist and writer from Texas currently based in Lisbon.
Elise Carlton works across mixed media, fiction, and poetry to construct and populate indigenous futurist narratives, specific to the Multi-Heritage Brown (detribalized, racialized) experience. Born in Texas, her visual language is influenced by popular visual culture of and depicting the region—cartoons, (x)ploitation western films and plays, commercial imagery, abandoned objects—exploring themes of identity, objectification/personification, historical amnesia and extinction, and is often tied, though not explicitly or exclusively, to performance. Her work has been exhibited in England, Finland, Mexico, Portugal and the US, and printed in Roundtable Journal and Poet Lore, among other publications.
Elise Carlton was at PADA in November and December 2021.
PADA is an Art Residency & Gallery based in a post-industrial site near Lisbon, Portugal.
