  1. Hello. I am Portuguese. A neighbor told me that he has two uncles who have always lived in the US. Now they are retired and have come to Portugal twice on purpose to treat various small health problems. They say it's cheaper to pay for plane travel and come here to the doctor. I was amazed and asked: why don't Americans create a system similar to ours or another one in Europe? It's complicated, they replied. And watching several American channels on politics, I realized why. Politicians are the problem.

  2. Wishing Leslie a prompt and full recovery.
On our 3rd vacation there last May, I had to have some lab work done and the cost was $4.50 euros. I need to have that bloodwork done every month, and here in the states it costs $360.00 each time.
A video about how you got Grier to Portugal would be great!! We know about the paperwork requirements and the headache to have it done within 10 days of departure… but info about what transportation option you chose would be great!!
Thank you for this great channel and all the hard work you put into it!!🙌🏾

  3. Get well soon Leslie, time to use tongs around hot oil now. It's one of those things you've probably done a million times before, but it only takes once to ruin your day. That's great to hear about the Dentist's charges, you just need to scout around for a good one now. Overall the Dental and Medical don't seem too bad as this is a big concern for everyone who wishes to retire.

  4. Thanks for another enjoyable video. I hope the burn heals soon!
I thought you might like to read this quote from Nye Bevan (Founder of the British National Health Service):
“Illness is neither an indulgence for which people have to pay, nor an offence for which they should be penalised, but a misfortune the cost of which should be shared by the community.”

  5. Can’t wait to get there next month for another visit and eventual move early in 2023. Health care is one of the main reasons I am retiring early. There are many other as well. Thanks Alan, Leslie and Wolf. JP

  6. When we travel to Europe, we take with us our European Health Insurance Card, which costs nothing and is valid for three years. Access to such a card is dependent on a family member being an European Economic Area citizen. It officially documents that a person is entitled to coverage of medically necessary healthcare in another EEA country or Switzerland, under the same conditions as that country's own nationals. EEA includes all EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Switzerland is part of neither, but is part of the single market. In addition, we have private year-round travel insurance that provides us with medical coverage when in other countries, most notably for us Canada, USA and the UK.

  7. Thank you Alan and Leslie. A really important topic and appreciate learning about quality and availability of health care in Madeira and how its significantly lower in costs as compared to US. I could relate to so much that you have shared here, such as fear of going to the hospital/doctors out of concerns based on experience how flood of bills that tend to follow any visits. I have gotten medical care overseas earlier in m life when I lived overseas and quality and availability was excellent, and the experience stress free and pleasant. Thank you for your transparency and generously sharing your experiences. Hope Leslie feels better soon.

  8. So sorry to hear about your burn, Leslie! I hope you're doing much better now. This was a great video, getting to see how the cost for medical care in Madeira (as in many other countries outside the US) is so affordable and first-rate. I met you both back in May when I was visiting Madeira. Since then I've sold my house and car, and donated almost everything else, and am now a full-time nomad (in Turkey now). I'm also in the process of obtaining residency (and eventual citizenship) in Portugal through the Golden Visa Program. Your videos are really helpful for nomads like me. Obrigado! Keep up the great work!

  9. Great video ,when you have to go to emergency here in Canada you don't pay anything it's covert by the regular heathcare insurance which is free ,now almost any Canadian Provinces. I'm mentioning this because I'm looking in to moving to Portugal and maybe even Madeira as I visited the island this August and loved most of it ,except was a bid shocked how densely populated it is. Question, so if you have basic health insurance in Portugal you still pay a fee if you seek medical care?

  10. Hello, I was just wondering why you have to have private insurance if the healthcare insurance in Portugal if the public health insurance is so good. What happens if you travel outside of Portugal? Does the particle health insurance count pre-existing conditions against you?

  11. Thank you for your story and hope Leslie's hand is healing quickly. You are so right about not going to the hospital in the US unless near death. I went to get an eye issue looked at. The doctor spent 5 minutes looking at it and sent me to the pharmacy for some drops. All told it cost me over $500 with insurance for that.

  12. Get well Leslie, so happy it wasn’t worse. And glad that your boys were home to cajole you into a doctor visit. In the US you would have sat with your hand in ice water watching the blisters form. Amazing story. Have a safe rest of your week! ❤
