Episode 4 Prioritizing jobs on our off-grid farm

After arriving on our farm in July, we compiled a list of jobs that needed to be done straight away. We underestimated the heat of the Portuguese summers and struggled in temperatures of 40 degrees +
With just a week before Mark had to return to the UK, we worked incredibly hard to get through the list, learning many lessons on the way! The biggest one was to check and double check the fuel type needed to work equipment!

  1. The inlet pipe for the pump needs to be primed (full of water) before it will suck up the pond water, I'd use a few 30l tanks of spring water to prime it. Let me know if you don't under stand this.
2 I would get a black cover for the new ibc to stop algae growth (only about €30)

  2. Glad you still have some water cause its been a brutally hot year this year 👍 Defo get a cover on your ibc tank, will help keep the tank clean. Have you thought about getting a solar fountain for the dam? would maybe help clean it 🤷 dont know how big you can get solar fountains but anything to get the water moving would help keep the mosquitos away and in time clean it just my 2 pence worth lol

  3. Barley Hay Bails placed in netted bags, attached to a Buoy float in the water Dam. The barley breaks down the Algae overgrowth. Naturally restoring the Bio. This will clear your water. The Fish will thank you. And then you may like the Dam next summer to swim. Change out your bale annually.
