  1. My grandfather left his property to my siblings and I. We lost everything due to Financial Ignorance!!! I will not make that mistake with my family! Thanks for giving me the knowledge and inspiration to move forward with knowledge and confidence! I love ❤️ your channel and blogs!

  2. Again an estates attorney in Iowa and Illinois here. I am so impressed with how on point these tips are. (Lol at putting a comment on here about hiring an estates attorney before seeing tip number 7.)

  3. Also a lawyer in Iowa and Illinois. I echo the sentiment about not doing online forms. I’d add that you should look at lawyers who hold themselves out as attorneys who focus on estate planning. Don’t go to an attorney who “dabbles” in wills.

  4. Just heard of a story of a man with a newlywed wife and 6mo old daughter who died in a car accident and his ex-wife was the beneficiary. Thank goodness the ex-wife was nice enough to hand it over, but eek!

  5. This is an extremely helpful video. As in-house counsel for a private company, I advised the Benefits Department. We had an employee who lived with his 88 year old mother. When he died unexpectedly, his ex-wife, who he had not spoken to in 4 years, was the named beneficiary who received $500,000. His mother received nothing!

  6. Living in Portugal you have to follow Portuguese laws or still from US? In Portugal by law everything the parents own will belong to their kids equally with no taxes. Reason why basically nobody has a will but if no kids then yes a will is necessary because that cousin who never care will fight for a piece of the estate.

  7. Great video! Just a question though, for you guys, being expats and living abroad, do you do this process just once in your home country, or just in Portugal? Or do you have to do it in both countries?
To put it another way, do you hire a lawyer just in the States, just in Portugal, one in each, or one super specialist who can somehow do both countries?

I have a similar situation and have been pondering this over for a while.

    Thanks!

  8. Just started drawing up my estate plan. I am single and don't have kids, and few assets (savings, 401k, and IRA) but I am creating one. If something happens to me, my assets will go to my brother's kids. I have him as my POA b/c I'm the POA for my mom and I know how difficult it is to make those decisions on someone's behalf b/c they didn't talk about or create a plan for themselves.

  9. This is a super valuable video. I consider myself well versed in FIRE principles and having a plan, but this definitely one area I've overlooked. Thanks for all the valuable content you put out, it's really changed my life and perspective and I've been able to share your channel with my parents who are about to retire but can't in the USA due to the extreme cost of living. Portugal is an option they're strongly considering and your channel helped them see it's possible. Thanks so much!

I'm signing up for the 365 program now, looking forward to the meetups and the daily tasks :).

  10. I literally thought about a Will last week & hadn't taken any action, until … Today learning about Estate Planning (a term I have heard of but ignored); I'm on Ready Set, Go. Thanks for 🔦shining the light. ❤💯🔥🙏

  11. FINALLY you talk Guys and Ladies talk about this. Next what I think is missing from this list is the affordability of an Esate Plan. It could be paid for out right or in monthly installments. Many people could feel this maybe out of reach but I know from experience a severe peace of mind is next to happen.

  12. I hope this is not a completey dumb question as I'm feeling so discouraged. Is it worth going through the FIRE program if someone is starting over, midlife and making just 55k?

  13. Maybe this is a topic for another video, but how much can this cost? Would a good place to start be googling for an estate planning attorney?
