FAMILY LIVING ON A FARM IN CENTRAL PORTUGAL – PORTUGUESE FRUIT FARMING AND LOVING LIFE!

Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.

Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!

In this episode we welcome you to join us in early summer time as we go about our daily goings on around our farm and the local surroundings, here in central Portugal.

We begin this week by taking a walk up to our top sheep meadow, where our little apiary is sited. Don our beekeeping suits and talk a bit about why and how we need to do regular hive inspections on our beehives, of which we have three.

My father and I have been keeping bees for a mere year and a half and we are not experts, but we do the best we can by our bees and try our hardest to keep them happy and healthy. We take a look inside and discover the bees are booming in their numbers and that they are in actual fact ready for a honey super to be added on top, which is a half sized box that the bees use for solely honey.

After we worked with the bees, together my brother in law, Lloyd, a stranger to the channel for some months now, and myself decided to pop down to our local fishing lake, Barragem do Pisco, where we fancied a spot of fishing and some time to catch up between ourselves, which was lovely. Lloyd talked a bit about why he has been absent from the channel for the last few months and discussed the new house that my sister and he have recently purchased in a close by village, Alcaide.

We did not manage to catch any fish, but we did catch a large turtle, unfortunately as we did not want a turtle to become unnecessarily damaged by the hook, fortunately it was only a small little puncture in his lip and I managed to swiftly get the hook out and return him back to his watery home.

After the lake, Lloyd and I went for a drink and then I made my way home. Back at the farm house I cooked up a beautiful dish, which was themed to this weeks episode nicely. A baked trout in a honey, soy, lime and white wine sauce. It was divine and I highly recommend anyone who likes the look of this fish dish to try it!

At the end of the day I sit on the veranda with my puppy pal, Mitzy during a large thunderstorm, she is petrified of thunderstorms and loud noises and needs to sit with me to keep her calm. I discuss the weeks goings on and bid you all an absolutely amazing week ahead.

Have an amazing week everybody and I look forward to seeing you all again next week!

Nice to know that your farm is self sufficient with most of the basic stuff you would need, specially for your cooking requirements. 😃
You always amaze me with your culinary skills, Joseph 👌 The trout looked so flavorful, and mouthwatering delicious. 👌 👌 👌
It sure was another enjoyable video!!! Cheers Joseph !!! 😃

  4. The scenery on your farm and around your farm is just beautiful. I enjoyed seeing you catch the turtle and releasing it, good man. That fish dish looked incredibly tasty. I may have to try to duplicate that recipe.

  5. Very happy to see a very happy Mitzi in your arms during the thunderstorm, bless her. Nice to see you with Lloyd again and get a bit of a catch up from him. Looking forward to his next news. Pretty video, a tonic for the eyes. Music was nice too. Keep well folks❣

  6. I thought I was about to watch the remake of the 1968 movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." 🤣Great information regarding the bee's hives. I think the most important and valuable part of the hives is the Propolis sometimes as the bee's glue. The propolis is excellent for treating and/or preventing several ailments. The best propolis is the Brazilian Green variety. Trout is one of my favorite fish… I never savored one similar to Chef Joseph. 🤗 Um bom fim de semana para voces. Wish dad a happy father's day (today, here in the US). Cheers!

  7. Hi Joseph, great video. Thanks.
Nowadays it's too hot for having the mouse guards on. They are only used in winter or in late summer if a hive is being robbed by other bees or wasps.
Don't know that dam. What's its name?

  8. Good morning! Love the thunder and the lake or dam was beautiful with the overcast sky and sun breaking through. You sure have some beautiful places in Portugal. I was very glad to see the bee hives and learn some of the process. I've wondered often about that. Here we haven't seen any bees this spring, just little bubbles around. Well once again the fish looked great! Great to see dad and Loyd too! Many hugs and well wishes in this new ahead!

  9. I get the idea that you and Lloyd could be quite the characters when you're together. That makes a brother in law feel like a good friend too.

  10. Always a treat to watch your videos. I love how you explain in layman's terms, how the hives work, easy to understand thank you 🐝🐝🌺🌻. It must be so lovely to be able to work alongside your dad and fish with your brother Lloyd, a real family affair.

  11. Great video again Joseph – thank you. Have a great week. Already looking forward to the next video. I am counting the days till I travel out and get to say hello in person. 👍🍒

  12. Hi lovely people, I’m an older lady who is testing the possibility of small holding in Portugal . Is artificial insemination available? I don’t want to deal with bulls, rams etc and am thinking of particular breeds not common there. Thanks for all of your videos they lighten my weeks x
