Week eleven of the renovations at the farm! It was another slow week and my stress levels went through the roof. Things got moving on some days with highlights including getting power and lights and also the septic system installed! But also experienced some big disappointments on discovering that cement just doesn’t cure the way I know around here, and that we may need to relook the roof due to possible further leaks.
Enjoying the journey? Consider buying me a cup of coffee 🙂

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!
This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.
Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.
Thank you for joining our journey!

It looks like your house will be beautiful. But oh my, what a sogging mess right now! Hopefully all will be sorted soon.
It will be so lovely when done, to have the sun streaming in, windows open, birds singing.
The road is long, and there are always (small) bumps in the way every now and then.
It's part of life i guess. Maybe life would get to boring if everything went smooth. 😀. A lot of work but the house is starting to look better and better.
I agree with Christine S… it's great to be able to test everything out in the rains. I have plenty of friends with experience with builders in this area… don't pay in full until you're 100% satisfied – no excuses. I know way too many people who have given up on builders to coming back to fix issues… some with serious problems like the roof. Some bad tiling. Everyone seems to have a nightmare story about builders here, so hold onto that final payment until everything is done and tested. I'm sure this is advice you've heard before but I really can't stress it enough based on the stories I've heard. Good luck with the fixes and good news about the shower pipe! I hope your humidity issues are solved once you get a wood burner fired up in there. I'm relieved you got the trench covered and the pipes in. The place is looking great!
Hi Christine, by my experience using the dehumidifier will do the job , just keep all doors and windows closed, you will notice when the water in the dehumidifier will getting lower and lower day after day.
Hello! Are you sure that 90% humidity setting is the current humidity? I would bet it is the target humidity you want! That could explain why it is not drying… Keep up and good luck!
Starting to look really good, Yo can shower soon 😀
💕Did you arrange to pay your builders for the completed job or per day/week as the door & the shower waste pipe seem like stupid mistakes that they should of known about💕
The gravel is doing the drainage job well and made the 'slip and slide' area useable. Good thinking!
Really feel for you trying to finalise everything under these weather conditions, but you are making plans to overcome your adversities like the painting, etc.
Your well is filling up nicely now and the piping connection is in!
What a lovely surprise to see the area 'flooded with light' ….beautiful light switches and light fittings. Can't wait for the big 'reveal all'.
How fortunate that the plumber didn't need to chop up the bathroom floor again for the shower outlet! Happy 'hidden surprise' pipe find, that one.
The drainage channels. ..good forward planning for possible water damming up in courtyard!
Pity about the problem with the paint not sticking to the granite walls. Glad you did some research and made a plan for doing what you can for now to dry the walls.
Those beams are looking really beautiful and make a 'bold' statement against the white of the walls. Going to look magical when done.
Protect that vent pipe and 'rodding eyes/inspection covers well. Mark them visibly with whatever works well for you. (Flags/boulders/traffic cones) You don't want any damage to come to these.
The Xmas festivities you, Niluka and Gerd attended in Penamacor looked happy and most enjoyable. A great and happy note to end the week
Good progress!
Keep that happy smile Christine. You can do it!
It's going to be stunning when it's all done, so just focus on that!
Maybe you can repurpose the smaller finer building waste on your road. Could be a good base for your gravel maybe?
I think the way the 3 lights on the wall were posted look nice. The on above the door makes it look bigger in that area. You will never forget all of this work with all of your accomplishments. Take Care,😊
I think dehumidifier and heater at same time ? Damp turned to steam to be filtered ? Who REALLY knows ? I live in Indiana USA a still cannot get a straight absolute answer as to how to insulate and vent an attic room that was never lived in before . Lol . Take care n keep pushing ! Oh a great guy for experienced advice is Nick a YouTuber in Portugal . He has the best info I've seen on venting damp proofing etc. ❣️❣️❣️
Dear lady, I will keep you in my prayers that things will go more smoothly for you. I would definitely run the heater to dry things up in there and then run the humidifier to make sure things stay dry. I hope you had a good weekend.
Maybe the cement could be tinted to a close color ? That may be way too technical and getting the color close ,too difficult . But the fan n dehumidifier and heater ought to solve the problem 🥰 You are so strong I'm amazed ❣️
….and you need air flow in the rooms
I'm glad the construction crew has been fixing issues as they come up, except for the door which they had been sure was installed correctly. Good thing you have been persistent. You've probably heard of the floods in Lisbon. It seems Portugal is getting the rain that was overdue. Good thing the groundwater has been refilling. I used to live in the Pacific NW of the US. Warm air can hold a lot more moisture than cold air can. In cold air the moisture will condense onto surfaces. Hopefully, all the holes have been plugged up so there's fewer air leaks. Having your wood burner installed soon will really help you.
same here in Thailand – painting walls, inside or outside, must be always done only when the monsoon is finish. no builders make any cement work doing the rainy season
❤❤
Omg ….how can someone "forget" to install the grey water exit on shower…. Keep a close eye on those guys because you don't want any nasty surprises that might be difficult to address

I’m surprised they are not using a salamander heater. Here in Canada this type of heater is used during the winter to dry the concrete as well as dry wall, it’s a long cylinder that is attached to a propane source. It has a blower and is extremely hot, it’s usually used at night so that the site is ready for next day. The dehumidifier is a slow way of extracting water from the air, most homes have them here due to the humidity. Hope this week goes better for you.🇨🇦
Oh wow glad to see that almost Done..buy a quick dry paint so it won't banished..😅 We got heavy rain here always and typhoon too if you are in countryside you can't go in the city because of muddy road. Take care and be safe Christine your place is turning green that's is great. 😊😊💕💕
Love how fast you learn and how you try to resolve problems.
You have the patience of a saint. On thing I wanted to mention. You may want to put a boulder next to your septic system pipe so people don't drive over It and break it. We had a construction worker run over our water connection pipe and it needed to be repaired.
Hi !!! Everything looks wonderful ! Don't you think it would be a good idea to put in a wood burner in the new area as well as the old area to maintain things dry and warm ?
A heater will do the trick if you can close up the area. The dehumidifier is a waste of energy. In the US PNW outside humidity is almost always 100%. Winter indoor paintups are a positive mental and physical winter activity.
Hi Christine in building there’s always ups and downs, splidge splodge it’s muddy so much rain for Portugal it flooded in Lisbon worst than ever known it’s making up for a very dry summer you had.it will dry out in the end.😊
For the dehumidifier make sure all opening are blocked or you are drawing moist air into the building
Down in damp Portimao I’ve been growing mould on my carcass with great success. The Algarve is attractive in summer but now, not so much.
You got this girl! 🫂 😊
I know not everyone is comfortable talking about costs but it would be so helpful, as someone thinking about buying/renos in Central Portugal, to know how much it would cost to hire someone do a reno like this.
Don't want to disappoint you but some years it rains in December, January and February….doing work construction outside with this weather ( and days are short sundown comes at around 6 pm in the summer we have daylight for 12 hours straight.. ) it's a waste of time /money…forget to paint the walls while is raining a waste of paint…better wait for March/April at least…that's why the dutch guy from Project Kamp take "vacations " from November till March…🙂
Sorry to hear things haven’t been going so well. But at least the rain has shown some of the issues and you can get them fixed. I thought I had read somewhere that it could take masonry at least a month to fully cure before painting. Not sure if that’s correct perhaps someone with more experience here can tell you for sure. I’m almost thinking you need a rubber coating paint first on those walls. I forget because it’s been awhile since your renovation started but did they dig a trench with gravel and French drain to keep the moisture from traveling up your walls? My mother in law has a similar home in and since the home is built without the proper drainage her walls always get signs of moisture. I’ve been watching a channel here on YouTube where they added drainage systems to their home in Portugal. I will come back and write it in as right now the name escapes me.
The good news for you is if you can handle this build nothing will stop you in the future! 😊You are amazing!
Hi Christine
I'm sorry about your wacky week.
I think it's time to bring in the big guns to have a talk with the builders.. Get Saint Nick (Project Portugal) to come by when they are there. He wil set them right 😊
I suppose no matter the season, the summer would be beastly hot and the winter beastly wet. The upside; it appears the draught is over. 😄 Putting the door in backwards, like really??? Anyway the room is looking fabulous and it will get done. Is the heater rated for the sq meters of the room? Maybe a second heater may be needed. I hope next week proceeds more smoothly. I can't wait for more!🙂👍👍🐕🐕🇨🇦❤

Oh my goodness! How frustrating. You are way more patient than I would be. I hope things move along a little smoother this week.
I’m so sorry Christine, I feel for you. You have been patient. You do have so many issues that come up but this living here or there is a bit annoying I know. I hope your guys can do all the things that are possible to do so they can tackle walls when the weather improves and it’s less damp. The de humidifiers are a good investment even for future builds around your property.
Great progress, if you need some advice you know where we are❤️
I just watched another You tuber in Portugal and they were told by neighbors it has been the rainiest winter in years. The aquifers, ponds and rivers are filling up which is wonderful, but it has been so hard for everyone to get things done! Sorry so many setbacks have happens, but happy for the things that did go well! 💕
Doing the renovation in the rainy season is actually a blessing in disguise. You would never have known about the roof leaks and the incorrectly fitted door if the work had been done in summer. In a couple of weeks time it will all be behind you, thankfully.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you girl, you have no gutters that's way your wholes are wet the rain from the roof drips on top of the whole.
