Farmhouse Reno Week 12 | Rain, Bathroom & Hope | My Central Portugal Farm #54

Week twelve of the renovations at the farm! It was a tough week. One that took nearly all the positive energy reserve I had. I had to dig deep to find and keep hope. A lot went wrong this week, including layers of plaster peeling off the walls, tasks being started and not finished. The new bedroom door being broken and the continued leak in the roof. Some things did go right, including getting some of the rubble removed, the log burner fitted and the bathroom tiling started.

Enjoying the journey? Consider buying me a cup of coffee 🙂

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!

This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.

Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.

Thank you for joining our journey!

  1. Don’t stress the small disappointments .this builds character. You will succeed and meet your goals in God’s time. Spend your energy this weekend welcoming the Christ child as your saviour and giving thanks for your wonderful life!

  2. This is a very uncommon weather situation in Portugal. As you probably saw on the news Portugal needed rain, perhaps not so much 🙄 anyway without all this water, you probably will not see the problem in the roof 😉 enjoy this season as much as you can with your 🐕dogs

  3. I was just wondering, you are saying that the wall in the bathroom (on the right as you walk in) is not straight towards the top. If this is a case and your builders put it up something needs to be done abaout it, fingers cross you find the right solution and balance things up. Merry Christmas 🙂

  4. A vertical water heater is not designed to be positioned horizontally. water heaters should be mounted in the orientation for which they were designed to be operated in. Mounting a vertical electric water heater in a horizontal position will adversely affect efficency, reliability, and safety.

  5. I was worried this would happen to you, I’m sure your a self assured woman but I can’t help feeling that if there was a man there your contractor wouldn’t be pulling some of those things I’m seeing. I’m not a contractor but I can see when things don’t look right. Best of luck, stay firm and I hope you have a Merry Christmas, this to will pass.🇨🇦

  6. Hi Christine you have had some ups and downs with the builders they need to replace the door and fix that leak, bathroom starting to look good nice job on the tiles.all this rain you are getting is making up with the dry summer you had, well Christine I wish a merry Christmas and a happy new year 🎉😊keep the videos coming.

  7. Hi Christine. Sorry for all the troubles. Hang in there. I would request your builder get you a new door. Installation error and all. I’m surprised they didn’t strip back a bit of the old tiles to tie in the new. Have them put a tarp up there in the meantime to keep your place dry. One comment I read suggest using food color to see where the leak is. That sounds like a good idea. As well as using a lot of the rubble you have from the construction to build up your driveway. All sounds good to help you get a little relief. Happy Holidays and I hope the new year brings some joy and a finished dried in home!😊

  9. I’m trying to comment in the most respectful way possible. Are these builders certified and insured? It’s not their fault if the weather is terrible and they can’t work, but there is no scenario in which they could ruin your door with shoddy workmanship and not take responsibility for it. They are in the wrong there and should get you a new door or lose all respect. Reputation matters. I hope you manage to have a good holiday nonetheless.

  10. Wow, you have some patience with all the shoddy workmanship. Re tiling, of curved wall, why not tile the lower half up till then feature tile line them paint the top half…?

  11. It was great to see you back such a shame that you have had so much problems remind me the name of the builders as I’ve just bought land I don’t want to get builders like that take care now have a great Christmas😊😮

  12. In a word cowboys Reno for me was near as bad culminating in solicitors / lawyers and plasterers scratching poofters in our brand new dishwasher unbelievable nightmare 🤬I have grave reservations of moving there after your experience

  13. Good luck with this project like always 🙂 I am shocked how much rain you have and how much water stays on the soil. Re the leak next to the front door, maybe it is a condensation from all the water drying from the living space and later dripping on the wall?

  14. Christine! WOW! What can I say? It is always darkest before the dawn! I pray next week everything will turn around. I believe in Mircles! I also believe in prayer! Which I will continue to do in your behalf! I can not wait another day for the video from the cùrrent week! Take extra care of yourself. Be certain you eat properly, rest enough, count your blessings. Practice being grateful for your health, your fur kids, your friends, ect! Hugs from Costa Rica

  15. Oh Christine, the builders have really messed up. I can only imagine your heartbreak and disappointment as the week progressed. The door damage is a real bummer. I feel your pain and the weather hasn't helped. Might be a good idea to mark out the areas where you may want to put in extra drainage when the weather gets better.

  16. Aww Christine….I do feel so bad for you. Been going through so much discouraging moments myself with the closing of my house, facing one setback after another. You have been staying positive earlier in the build…stay with it. Keep smiling, putting one foot in front of the other. You have yourself a Merry Christmas
    with your special companions!
