Farmhouse Reno Week 8 | Silky Smooth Render & Fixing Roof Leak | My Central Portugal Farm #50

Week eight of the renovations at the farm! Now that we have a roof the interior work continues. The walls get their first and second coat of render, we start chipping away at the big granite boulders in the columns that will remain a feature. A leaky roof causes some power outs and a run-in with a very unhappy neighbour.

Enjoying the journey? Consider buying me a cup of coffee 🙂

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!

This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.

Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.

Thank you for joining our journey!

  1. Beautiful rendering work. I like the organic feel of the new and old transition. But if it were for me I would have had them install a stone ledge for all my knick knacks and potted plants. 😊 I can’t wait to see the pointing and plaster done. How exciting for you!
Unfortunate about your neighbor. Is that wall not yours or perhaps community property?

  2. It looks like you have a problem as the water has no where to run at the top where the two roofs meet?
Might be wrong but as far as I can see from the filmit looks like it.
They meet at an V angle. Water runs to bottom of V and under the the ridge. Not sure how long flashing will help for

  3. Many thanks or this episode, your builders doing good progress. If you havent taken already any images of where the electric cables go I recommend ti take some screenshots so in future you know wher you can drill in walls to hang something on. All the best.

  4. Hi Christine. Great progress. Your previous video on your roof shows probably why it is leaking. The joint between the old and new roof isn’t correct in my opinion. Rainwater doesn’t run down the roof but blocks at the middle ritch (and probably leaks inside). I can’t ad a picture here to show you what I mean.

  5. Hi Christine, bet you didn't think you'd be needing your winter gear. Rain is liquid snow. It's good you found the leak, better now than later. You have a good plaster, he understands his media. The room is taking shape so fast. Paint and furnishings will complete it. Your bathroom is a good size, sanitary wear is so slim these days. You'll be Finished I think before Xmas. Loved this video, keep warm Christine, stay safe and sane.

  6. Great progress Christine !! Personally I would have tried to take as much of the debris from the rear with the digger over the top of the existing wall or, maybe you could take down the section of wall that runs alongside your courtyard boundary , then the neighbour could surly not complain ! And anyhow whatever happened to a little give and take, As long as you leave things how you found them or even improved the area… I don't understand some people's mentality lol xx

  7. Amazing progress Christine! Fab team, true tradesmen. Not so fab neighbor though! Hopefully the restored wall, now in a better shape than before, has a reconciling effect. Wishing you a nice week💜, Katarina

  8. After the little bad spell with the neighbour the look of those plastered walls surely made up for everything else!
Excellent plasterwork,as you said, by a true craftsman! They also cleaned and finished the stone column feature beautifully,
    Well done.
Hope the roof leak gets sorted easily…rather a blessing that it happened now while they are still busy working on the building, than later when
    everything is completed.
    Fantastic progress.
Looking so forward to the next update!
    All the best, Christine

  9. So sorry about the conflict with your neighbor! Hopefully it is over now! So much progress has been made. It is looking wonderful! I can imagine the finished walls and spaces now. I am very happy for you! As far as your decision to rent a little apt to escape to and to have hot showers, that was a wonderful idea! Girls have to be clean especially when we spend so much time in dirty construction sites.

  10. Looks amazing Christine!
Really pleased you're happy with the way it's coming along!
Shame about the roof, perhaps the ridgecaps need to be removed and redone with a waterproof membrane underneath to prevent the leakage?
    Anyhow have a great week!
    Cheers from London 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧
